SEASON 1993/1994
After five seasons in Madrid at Atletico, Donato signed for Deportivo. He made
his debut against regional rivals Celta in Riazor and was a starter throughout
most of the season, playing 36 matches and scoring 10 goals. This amount of
goals was his highest ever at Deportivo. But his first season ended in a real
deception as he witnessed from the bench how Djukic missed his famous penalty.
A penalty Donato was supposed to have taken...
SEASON 1994/1995
The second one of Donato at the club and Deportivo won the first trophy in its
existence: the Copa del Rey against Valencia. In the Liga Donato played 37
matches scoring 8 goals.
SEASON 1995/1996
Another acceptable season of Donato although as a team the season ended in a
deception, despite winning the Supercopa against Real Madrid in the summer of
1995. Donato played 39 Liga matches scoring 5 goals. At the end of the season
Javier Clemente picked him for playing the Euro 1996 tournament.
SEASON 1996/1997
Donato keeps being a starter at Deportivo although more in defence now than as
a central midfielder. This prevented him from scoring as he was used to,
hitting only 3 goals in 39 Liga matches.
SEASON 1997/1998
One of the worst seasons of Donato at Deportivo, as the whole team played an
awful season. Donato played 30 matches and scored just 1 goal. In the winter
he was close to signing for Compostela.
SEASON 1998/1999
The first season under Javier Irureta, and the Basque coach used him a lot as a
substitute. Still Donato reached 31 matches scoring just 1 goal, only his
second Liga goal in two seasons.
SEASON 1999/2000
Irureta again didn't use him much as a starter, but the work of Donato was very
important to win the first Liga title ever of Deportivo. In 29 matches he
scored 3 goals, among which the one against Espanyol in the last match of the
season.
SEASON 2000/2001
Again 29 matches scoring another 3 goals. In the summer of 2000 winning the
Supercopa against Espanyol means the fourth prize at Deportivo for Donato.
SEASON 2001/2002
The beginning of the end for Donato, as injuries and tactical decisions make
him only play 17 Liga matches scoring 2 goals. An injury prevents him to be in
the Bernabeu stadium when Deportivo win the second Copa del Rey in their
history against Real Madrid.
SEASON 2002/2003
His tenth and probably last season at the club, playing 15 Liga matches scoring
3 goals. The Supercopa won against Valencia was his sixth trophy at the club.
