7th April 2003 -- A great come-back of Deportivo secured three points against
runners-up Real Sociedad meaning the team has now overcome the Basques.
Real Sociedad took the lead in the first half after Nihat scored as Capdevila
equalized just before the break. However, Real Sociedad were given a present
when they were awarded a penalty seconds later although justice was done when
Kovacevic hit the bar. Eventually it was Fran who scored the winner with about
10 minutes to go.
The win was a deserved one although the Basques took the initiative at the
start of the match. They pressed hard when Deportivo had possession and tried
to use the speed of Nihat to surprise Molina. The Turkish player had the first
chance of the match when he shot wide after three minutes. Nevertheless,
Tristan had a free chance when he appeared in front of goalkeeper Westerveld
and moments later Sergio had a shot too high after a pass of Makaay.
So when Deportivo looked to take the initiative Real Sociedad took the lead.
In the sixteenth minute Nihat received the ball and used his speed to beat
Molina who had come to meet him. The goal did not much turn the match around
as Deportivo played better by the minute and appeared more and more before
Westerveld. Makaay had a good opportunity after twenty-five minutes but could
not convert it.
Later in the first half Jorge Andrade had to leave the pitch because of an
injury. He was replaced by Joan Capdevila, with the Catalan player taking the
left wing and Romero moving to the centre as Irureta hadn't picked neither
Donato nor Pablo Amo nor Djorovic in his squad and Cesar is still suspended.
But the hand of Irureta was lucky as it was Capdevila who scored a very
important equalizer just before the break. He scored from a non-existent free
kick to surprise Westerveld, although the Dutch goalkeeper could have done
better saving his shot.
The match still had not reached the break though as referee Lopez Nieto
awarded Real Sociedad a penalty after Lionel Scaloni was said to have fouled
Gurrutxaga. A harsh decision from a referee who never has been liked in La
Coruna. However, Darko Kovacevic seemed to have lost his nerves as his shot
almost broke the bar in two pieces.
During the break Irureta decided to take off Diego Tristan and to replace him
by Valeron. Deportivo held the initiative during the second half although
Real Sociedad made life hard for the Galicians as Kovacevic was very active.
But Valeron would play an excellent second half and Deportivo were more
creative with him on the pitch.
After an hour Roy Makaay also had to leave the pitch injured and he was
replaced by Luque. So although both Tristan and Makaay had started the match
the duo Valeron/Luque had to finish it off.
Minutes later Luque almost had scored as he headed in a cross by Fran. But
luck was not on his side as the header only hit the post. Moments later it
was the other way round as Fran just missed a cross provided by Luque.
With eight minutes to go Fran didn't fail as he picked up the ball near the
box and tried his luck with a shot aimed at the goal of Real Sociedad. The
ball took a small deflection of defender Gurrutxaga and Westerveld had no
chance stopping it.
Overall Deportivo deserved the victory against the Basques. The team had
fought for ninety minutes and created several good chances. Also, Deportivo
had to cope with two injuries (of Jorge Andrade and Makaay) and almost had to
deal with big setback as fortunately Kovacevic missed his penalty.
For Manuel Pablo it was the first time he started a Liga match since his
awful injury sustained on 30 September, 2001 against Celta de Vigo in Riazor.
Manuel Pablo did well, as did Valeron. Depending on the injuries of Jorge
Andrade and Makaay it seems that Deportivo have recovered almost all of their
players in time for the vital weeks coming.
