Makaay joins list of legends with 100 goals in Spain
MADRID, (AFP) - Dutch striker Roy Makaay fired his way to a century of goals
in the Spanish first division on Saturday. His untidy goal in Deportivo La
Coruna's 2-1 win over Espanyol was also his 29th of a prolific season and
made him only the seventh foreigner to reach the milestone in the Primera
Division.
The 28-year-old Dutchman joins greats such as Ferenc Puskas in the centurion
club, although he is some way short of Mexican Hugo Sanchez's 234 goals for
Real Madrid from 1981 to 1994.
Makaay arrived in Spain in the summer of Vitesse Arnhem and spent two seasons
at Tenerife before moving north.
He started slowly with just seven goals in his first year at the Canary
island club but then started to get into his stride.
Makaay scored 22 goals in his first season with Deportivo but this season he
has turned into the deadliest forward in Europe, winning the European Golden
Shoe.
Roger Garcia open the scoring for Espanyol after just 12 minutes but Makaay
brought Deportivo level 16 minutes before the whistle and then less than 60
seconds later Albert Luque got Deportivo's winner.
With the title to be decided on Sunday, Deportivo finish the season in third
place.
