LIONEL SCALONI: "MY DEBUT WITH DEPOR WAS A BITTER DAY" Lionel Scaloni is one of the most experienced players at Deportivo, as his match against Sevilla was number 150 for him in the Spanish LigA: His debut he made against Sporting Gijon when Deportivo achieved a 2-1 victory at the start of 1998. Q: Are you happy with reaching your 150th match? A: To be honest I didn't know they were so many. Yes, I'm really happy to be in a team like this, and I'm happy to play with so talented people. Q: How are you feeling recently? A: I feel good. The coach is rotating players and now I have to play as a fullback. I am in shape now. Q: You needed to rest... A: The level of demand in a team such as Deportivo is enormous. I really wasn't tired, but it's not bad to have a break every now and then either. Q: Do you feel comfortable as a defender? A: It's not a new position for me. I have played in that position half of these 150 matches. This year I began to play there because other teammates got injured. The coach is the one who takes the decisions, we are here just to play. Q: What do you think about going out of the Copa? A: Once you are out you value it more. We don't have to be hypocritical, because it's obvious we'd love to be in the semi-finals now. But, well, now we have to focus in the other two competitions we are in and that's all. Q: It will be a bad year if Depor do not win any title... A: Depor do not need to win titles. Nobody is asking us to win trophies, although it's evident that we have a good squad and because of that we want to win everything. Q: Is Real Madrid the rival to beat? A: Real Madrid is the current leader. But we can't forget about Valencia, despite the fact they were in some bad shape. Q: You expect Real Madrid to suffer? A: I personally think they're going to suffer. But, what is more important for us is to play good so we can take advantage of it. Q: What do you remember from all these years at Depor? A: The change in the institution in comparison with what it was when I came here. Deportivo has grown a lot in recent years. I've was present at the birth of Deportivo as a big club. Q: What match do you remember most? A: It was the Copa final against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, without a doubt. It was a very special experience for everybody. Q: And the most bitter day? A: There were a few. For example, in the day of my debut I only played two minutes, and that was bitter. I also bear in mind the recent 8-3 defeat at Monaco.
