IRURETA: "RONALDO USES EVERY OPPORTUNITY HE GETS"
Deportivo are improving their game as they now have seven days per week to
prepare their matches. But despite the team created a lot of chances to score
against Athletic and Sevilla, it costs them to score goals. Irureta analyzes
this and praises Madrid striker Ronaldo for his effectiveness.
Q: The good games of Deportivo stand opposite to the lack of goals.
A: It's true that the team creates a lot of chances, but fails to convert them.
In general I am not worried about it. But sometimes we'll have to score more
to win points.
Q: I never see you bringing in another defender and to defend a 1-0 lead.
A: I have never done that and I won't do it now. This team has a special
dynamic and the natural instinct is to attack and to score a second goal.
Q: It seems that Luque and Tristan don't function too well together.
A: Every player has it's one characteristics. Albert is fast while Diego has
other capabilities. Now I must synchronize them.
Q: What do you ask from them?
A: From Diego I ask to stand free to have a shot on goal. His job is to be
there and to finalize an attack, but he isn't the only one to join the play.
Valeron, through the centre, and Victor at the second post also must offer
solutions. Luque is creating two or three opportunities per match and the
team should use them. There's a lack of coordination in these plays. But this
aspect will be crucial at the end of the season.
Q: What about the defence?
A: I always aim at an equilibrium in the team. But to be sharp upfront will
increase our chances to win because we don't leak many goals this season.
This Deportivo has won a lot concerning equilibrium comparing to the last
seasons.
Q: Is it frustrating Deportivo are only third despite a great season?
A: This team is more mature now and capable to control their emotions.
Pressure is handled well although only failures of the other teams can get us
back into the fight for the Liga.
Q: Did you think Madrid could lose at Valladolid?
A: I admit that during the break I was satisfied with the 2-0 score. But Madrid
are unpredictable. Still I am convinced that away from home they will continue
to have a lot of problems.
Q: What about Ronaldo?
A: Every opportunity he gets is a goal. He's a decisive player, and in away
matches is too sharp and quick for his opponents.
Q: What’s your opinion about possible new signings of Deportivo, like Ruben
and Valdo?
A: For us it’s impossible to sign big stars. And I will be satisfied with
players who, despite not being at a top level yet, have experience in the Liga
and are young. Especially as we try to remodelate the squad.
Q: You already were presented with Ivan Perez.
A: He’s a great guy who always works very hard. Besides, he does well in the
group and that’s also a good characteristic. I think we can use him although
it depends on who the others are.
Q: Finally, what do you think about Juventus?
A: They form a great team and have some fantastic players. But this season
they’re not so confident in defence as before. They’re leaking more goals
as usual. Anyway, a 2-0 win in Riazor would be a great result.
