LUQUE: "THERE IS A BELIEF AT THIS CLUB THAT WE CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING"
Luque (25) is currently living one of the sweetest moments in his career.
He has adapted to play on the left wing and has recently admitted he is
"having fun" there. But be certain that his rivals think otherwise. His
speed and accuracy allow him to both score and create many chances for
his team-mates. The talented Catalan is now a key piece for Depor.
Q. What was the reaction in the dressing room when you drew Juventus?
A. Well, as you can imagine the reaction wasn't that good, but the draw
has been made and now we have to just put all our forces together and try
and eliminate Juventus. The worst thing about the fixture is that we play
the first leg in A Coruna and so we will have to travel to Turin with a
big win if we are to have a comfortable second leg.
Q. Why did Italian teams have the edge over La Liga clubs last season?
A. I think the difference was that when AC Milan had their chances,
they made the most of them. Also I don't think we really saw the best
of Real Madrid or any of the other Liga sides in last season's
competition. And when it gets to the knockout phase you can't afford
to have a bad day at the office. At the end Juventus and Milan played
an Italian final in typically Italian fashion which was proved by the
final result: 0-0. It's frustrating because I think that Liga teams
play better football but in this game the only thing that matters is
the final result and in last year's Champions League the results went
the way of the Italian teams. I hope that it will not be the same story
this year.
Q. Are you happy at Deportivo?
A. Of course, but in football you can never be sure what will happen
in the future. I like to play as every player does and when I don't,
I get frustrated. But the most important this is winning and I hope
that I can contribute as much as possible to making Deportivo a bigger
club than it is now.
Q. Will it help your chances of going to Euro 2004 if Deportivo do well
in the Champions League?
A. [Spain coach] Inaki Saez knows all the Spanish players very well
and what we can do for the Spanish national team. That's one thing
that is very clear. But if you don't play regularly for your club
then it does narrow your chances of going to Euro 2004. At the moment
I think I am in a good position to be selected for Portugal and I am
confident in my ability to do well for the Spanish team. But the boss
of Spain is Inaki Saez and I will have to accept any decision he makes.
Q. Have Deportivo got a realistic chance of winning the Liga?
A. Of course we have, and of winning the Champions League also.
Deportivo need to win a title like the Champions League. It would be
fantastic for the city and for our supporters. There is a belief at
this club that we can achieve anything.
