新戰術？新陣型？
A NEW FORMATION FOR DEPORTIVO?
With the absences of Duscher and Sergio for the match against Albacete,
coach Javier Irureta of Deportivo chose to use a 4-1-3-2 formation.
This proved to be a wise decision as Depor achieved a 0-2 victory.
This Sunday against Osasuna, Jabo used the same formation and added
another 2-0 victory.

Since Javier Irureta's arrival at Deportivo he has, without much alteration,
always relied on the 4-2-3-1 system only making changes when he thought it
was necessary. In the past season, to live through the injury of Valeron,
Jabo modified his tactics to a 4-4-2 formation. This season Irureta used
the ‘normal’ 4-2-3-1 system until the match with Albacete comprising a
team with a line of four defenders: Naybet, Cesar and Jorge Andrade playing
in the centre of defence, the duo Manuel Pablo/Hector on the right and the
couple of Romero/Capdevila on the left. In midfield Jabo picked two defensive
midfielders that he selected from the trio Mauro Silva/Duscher/Sergio.
Valeron was the playmaker, Victor Sanchez, Munitis, Scaloni and Luque were
the wingers and the duo Tristan/Pandiani the strikers.

Now, Irureta says that Albert Luque is in reality a second striker because
he doesn't have the same responsibilities of Victor Sanchez in defence.
In that sense Jabo speaks of a 4-1-3-2 formation: with Luque as the second
striker and one of the ‘defensive midfielders’ losing a place. This means
that Sergio has moved to the bench and Fran plays with Valeron in midfield,
with the latter moving more to the right side. Fran goes to the left but
away from the wing. When Deportivo have to defend, both players fall back
as Mauro Silva is the one who occupies a intermediary position between the
midfield and the line of four defenders.
The work of Victor Sanchez is multifunctional. He and Luque have the
mission of opening and advancing some meters, causing a formation in which
Depor have two wingers and one striker. The two goals against Osasuna are
good examples of this. At the first goal, Tristan headed the ball and
found Victor Sanchez who came from behind. For the second, the assistance
of Luque found both players in the area of Osasuna where Victor Sanchez
again found the back of the net.
In defence the formation is the same. Deportivo have four defenders,
Mauro Silva is in front of them and the trio Victor Sanchez, Valeron and
Fran are in a 3-line formation from the right to left. Fran does not pass
the midfield, thereby creating a hole because Luque does not return to
fill up the space. Depor is then a team configured to the right. This
allows the team to increase it's capability to manage the ball. With the
association of Fran and Valeron the velocity in the passes and the quality
of each assistance is better and there is more variety on he pitch.
This new system was best highlighted in the game against Osasuna and could
be seen when Depor had the ball and rotated it on the field, causing the
players of Osasuna to chase shadows. The bad thing of the new formation is
that Sergio is now benched. This means that the squad lost his skills,
the capability to create surprise, and some intensity in the field.
Now, the thing that Irureta must decide is: should this formation be used
only against teams that go to the Riazor with the mission of defending
themselves? Or should it also be used against teams with the level of
Valencia or Real Madrid? The curious fact is that this change of
formation wasn't seen in the training sessions at the fields of Abegondo
in the past weeks.
