PREVIEW: ATLETICO de MADRID vs DEPOR
Depor expect to put further pressure on Real Madrid and Valencia
with a victory today. If Depor defeats Atletico de Madrid the gap
with the leader would be provisionally reduced to 1 point, placing
the Galicians in second position. Depor are on their way up after
winning three consecutive games, while Atletico could not manage to
get a win for the last four weeks.
However, the Galicians have not won at Calderon Stadium in four years.
Depor defeated Atletico 5-1 at Riazor, but today's match will nevertheless b
e a disputed one. Indeed, Atletico de Madrid was the team that put Depor
out of the Spanish Cup.

Coach Irureta has his doubts on defence. Cesar is finally recovered
from his injury, and either him or Romero could play alongside
Portuguese Andrade. Capdevila is to be the left fullback, as long as
Romero plays as central defender. If Cesar plays, then Romero will be
the left fullback. Scaloni will invariably be the right fullback today.
In the midfield Fran - who is going through a good spell - could be a
starter. Yet, the captain is on medication, and this could eventually
convince Irureta to make Sergio play instead. The attacking line will
remain the same after last week's, with Victor on the right wing, Luque
on the left, Valeron as an attacking midfielder, and Tristan in front.
On the other hand, Atletico de Madrid aim for a home victory that could
help to consolidate them in European positions. Though, problems mount
up for coach Manazano, as he is forced to improvise an attacking formation.
Either Toche or Arizmendi, both players from the youth system, will be
accompanying Greek striker Nikolaidis. Talented Fernando Torres, a key
player for Atletico, is sanctioned and he will not play this game. Right
fullback Gaspar is out injured, and Aguilera will play instead. Also,
either Garcia Calvo or Simeone will play alongside Lequi on the centre
of the defence.
Atletico's midfield will be somewhat different to the system used
against Depor in previous games. De los Santos will be the only playmaker,
and skilful Ibagaza will be in front of him. Novo and Galician Nano will
then be the right and left wingers respectively.
Then again, this is another crucial game for Depor. A victory will not
just dramatically improve the chances to claim the Liga title, but it
would also boost Depor's moral before the forthcoming Champions League
match to Juventus. Still, as Sergio points out: "the most important
thing is to keep a cool head. We have to focus and think only in defeating
Atletico. That's our mission. Once we do that we can wait for the other
teams to fail".
