PREPARATIONS FOR VITAL MATCH CONTINUE
Both Deportivo and Juventus seem to have almost fit squads to face
each other on Wednesday (Riazor, 20h45). At Deportivo midfielder Valeron
passed a fitness test and he will be available for the team when playing
the Italians. For their part, Juventus can count on striker Trezeguet but
left Igor Tudor at home as the Croatian midfielder, scorer of the winning
goal against Deportivo last season, hasn’t recovered in time for the match
in Riazor.
VALERON IS AVAILABLE
The tension is high at Deportivo as everybody is aware of the importance
of this game. That will be the reason why Luque and Irureta had a little
incident during the training session of Monday. In the recent past Irureta
had confrontations with some players of Deportivo as the cases of Naybet,
Romero, Tristan and Djalminha are well known. This time winger Albert
Luque didn't finish the training session in the city of Abegondo.
It seems that the Catalan player had a discussion with Irureta about an
individual action on the pitch. According to some people Luque claimed that
his teammates didn't pass the ball to him during the session. Irureta
answered to Luque that in that case he must request the ball from his
colleagues. This answer wasn't satisfying to Luque as he got angry and he
turned to the dressing room before Jabo ended the session. Another
version of the little incident said that the Catalan left the pitch after
Irureta asked him to do it.
After the training sessions Luque didn't want to speak about the incident
and Irureta said in an ironic tone that “it’s so important that it
almost looks like a lethal disease”. The truth is that this incident shows
the tension of the players before the important matches in the next weeks.
After all, the confrontations with Juventus (twice), Barcelona and Valencia
will define the future of Depor on this season.
Other news is that Brazilian midfielder Mauro Silva and goalkeeper
Molina didn't participate in the training sessions. It seems that both
of them have little injury problems and Jabo decided to give them a rest.
According to the medical staff of the club the participation of this two
players in the match of this Wednesday is secure and the decision was taken
only for precaution.
As said, playmaker Valeron is available for this match as the player had
a good training session on Monday. Valeron commented that “I feel very
fine and at ease. I trained without problems and that’s why all went well”.
Valeron played the training match of Monday and all indicates that he will
play against Juventus. Valeron himself said about it that “I didn’t feel
any pain and I feel fit enough to play”.
Midfielder Lionel Scaloni showed to be optimistic about the chances of
Deportivo to get into the next round. Scaloni said that “we won’t declare
that we will win the Champions League. But we have a lot of confidence to
reach the next round because we know our rival well and the fact that
there’s not much difference between the two teams. I think the ties will
be decided on minimal details”.
The Argentinean player added that “we know that this confrontation will
decide which club will be among the best of Europe. But in my opinion we
didn’t deserve to be eliminated by them last season so we’re looking
forward to beat them. There are no revenge feelings to them but to
ourselves”. Scaloni is thinking about a home win to travel to Turin with
a certain advantage. “And we have been waiting for a while on this match.
The most important thing is to win it and, if possible, to prevent them
from scoring. Winning just by one goal will already mean an advantage
to us”.
LIPPI ALMOST HAS COMPLETE SQUAD
For his part, Juventus coach Marcello Lippi has included almost all of
his important players to face Deportivo, including French striker David
Trezeguet. With the mentioned absence of the injured Igor Tudor this is
the list of players Lippi has decided to use: Gianluigi Buffon, Ciro Ferrara,
Alessio Tacchinardi, Paolo Montero, Gianluca Pessotto, Antonio Conte,
Fabrizio Miccoli, Alessandro Del Piero, Pavel Nedved, Antonio Chimenti,
Mark Iuliano, Enzo Maresca, Alessandro Birindelli, Mauro Camoranesi,
David Trezeguet, Stephen Appiah, Gianluca Zambrotta, Marco Di Vaio,
Lilian Thuram, Antonio Mirante and Nicola Legrottaglie.
In their competition win at Bologna (0-1) coach Lippi couldn’t use the
suspended Alessio Tacchinardi and slightly injured David Trezeguet and he
wanted to give defenders Thuram and Legrottaglie some rest. The question
whether Trezeguet will play against Deportivo will only be answered in the
final hour before the match. The most probable line-up of Juventus is:

Goalkeeper Buffon showed his relief about Makaay not facing his team
anymore. The Italian goalie said about it that “for every goalkeeper in
the world it’s good news not to face him. That’s why I am happy that
I won’t meet him in this round. The Dutch striker is one of the best
finishers I have seen in the world of football”.
When commenting on the match itself Buffon said that “it has more
complications for us than people think. Deportivo posses some excellent
players and we can’t give them any advantage. In Europe matches like
this are open and harsh for everyone. If a club has too much confidence
in itself it could get eliminated in this phase”.
