IRURETA WANTS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE IN RIAZOR
Basque coach Javier Irureta of Deportivo leads his team in their fourth
consecutive Champions League season as the Galicians have done pretty well
so far. In 2001 and 2002 the two group phases were survived after which
the team were defeated against Leeds United and Manchester United. Last
season the second group phase proved to be too difficult as Juventus beat
Deportivo by a injury-time goal of Tudor. Now it's up to Deportivo to take
some sort of revenge.
Javier Irureta knows how important it will be to take something from
Riazor before playing in Turin in 15 days. "And that's why we need the
help of our supporters as never before. Let them scream and shout but not
protest against the team". Irureta added that "it's evident that looking at
the home match of last year we should be more concentrated now. That match
finished 2-2 after we had taken a 2-0 lead because Italians never give up.
It's a lesson we have learned and we will keep in mind during the match of
tonight. But I still am more occupied about scoring goals than to prevent
them from scoring because a 0-0 would be a bad result for us. It's important
to keep a clean sheet, but our priority is to score goals. And if we do
so we should cherish this advantage and know how to preserve it as our
opponents exactly know how to do that".
But Irureta didn't want to use the word 'revenge' when talking about
this match. "In football revenge doesn't exist. It's just about winning
one day and losing on the other". And what about the fact that
traditionally Deportivo have never survived the double leg encounters in
the Champions League? "That doesn't worry me as in our third try it could
work. I think that we had some bad luck on the other occasions".
Finally the coach of Deportivo, at the club since 1998, was asked about
the opponent. "It's a strong team with a good physical level and we should
try to use the opportunities we're presented. Normally they defend with
eight players and that's why it's important for us to play with fast moves.
It will be fundamental for us to launch quick attacks and to catch their
defence by surprise". Juventus are an experienced team, with strength
and they know how to play these matches. Besides, they have a strong
offensive tridente in Trezequet, Del Piero and Neved. I don't fear them,
but we will have to watch out for them.
