[聯賽] A Crazy Match
REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 - BARCELONA 3 (LIGA)
A crazy match saw five goals, one sending off and another disastrous
performance of referee Tristante Oliva. Deportivo played a good match and
deserved a lead. But when Tristan was denied a penalty Barcelona struck twice
(Ronaldinho, Saviola) and the match seemed over. Minutes into the second half
Ronaldinho scored 0-3 and Deportivo looked hopeless. Nevertheless, Walter
Pandiani did something back, twice, after which both clubs had plenty of
chances to score more goals. The advantage seemed to go to the home team when
Motta was sent off, another mistake by the referee. But the score didn't
change and so Deportivo probably will give up their title hopes.

BEFORE THE MATCH
At the moment before kick-off Deportivo were flying high after taking ten
points from the four previous Liga matches and beating Juventus 1-0 in the C
hampions League. But the opposing team were doing even better as they had won
five Liga matches in a row and by though their European win at Brondby (0-1) c
ould become favourites to win the UEFA Cup this season. Both teams didn’t
suffer suspensions and only some players were absent because of injuries
(Duscher, Marquez, Kluivert), meaning that all was in place for a good,
attractive football match. Fran was left out of the team as Irureta opted for
the tandem Sergio/Mauro Silva, while Tristan once again was given a chance.
Riazor saw the best entrance of the season with only some seats not being
covered.
FIRST HALF
The first minutes of the match already indicated that both teams wanted to
play good football and neither side refrained from attacking. Barcelona
seemed to have more initiative at the start and even could have taken an
early lead when Saviola found Molina on his way. But Deportivo responded
with an opportunity of Diego Tristan, after which the match went from left
to right.
After fifteen minutes Deportivo started to dominate more and created several
dangerous situations. One was crucial when Tristan was fouled in the box by
Cocu after 20 minutes. But referee Tristante Oliva, who helped Real Madrid
so much by giving them an injury-time present in the shape of a penalty when
they were 0-1 behind against Valencia, wanted to avoid another decision like
this. Once again, where Real Madrid were given help Deportivo did not got a
penalty when they deserved one. A nervous Tristante was close and well placed
but didn’t dare to take the decision. After 38 minutes Diego Tristan claimed
another penalty although this didn’t look like one. Well, if one applies the
logic of football. As Tristante Oliva was so helpful to Madrid two weeks ago
he might as well have been now to Deportivo.
(翻出上上一輪就用過的草人 你這爛殘判 有沒有搞錯啊!)
But football is cruel. Just when Deportivo got into the match and could have
deserved the first goal, Barcelona struck through Ronaldinho. This amazing
Brazilian found the net with a header after a free kick of Xavi found him.
After this goal Deportivo seemed hurt and didn’t react. Instead, Barcelona
didn’t relax and added a second as this time Saviola had to thank Xavi for
providing him with a goal.
SECOND HALF
Irureta reacted during the break by taking off Victor Sanchez and Diego
Tristan and replaced them by Fran and Walter Pandiani. The Basque coach of
Deportivo wanted to bring some fresh blood into the team although Barcelona
struck again within three minutes. In a quick counterattack of Luis Garcia
and Saviola it was Ronaldinho who struck his second goal of the night to
bring Deportivo a difficult task. Although he might have been in an off-side
position, it was evident that the home team needed some kind of come-back
they had on March 7, 2001 when Paris-Saint Germain were beaten 4-3 after a
0-3 score.
But as Pandiani scored three goals in that match, there was reason for hope.
And he soon repaid the confidence Irureta finally put in him. Pandiani scored
with two headers, after assists of Romero, and after 56 minutes it was a
match again. There was more than half a hour to play and Deportivo were
launching attack after attack. Fran and Valeron connected well and the crowd
got behind the team.
The match got even more emotional when after 75 minutes Brazilian midfielder
Motta of FC Barcelona was sent off. After some minutes into the second half
Motta was given a yellow card after his colleague Cocu had made a foul. Now,
once again referee Tristante Oliva proved to be incapable of leading such a
top match as also this time it wasn’t Motta who made the foul, but Oleguer.
Luque then made an incredible miss after he was presented a golden opportunity
by Sergio. But the former Barcelona youth player caused an incredible miss
and indicated that it wasn’t going to be Deportivo’s night. Instead,
Barcelona kept being very dangerous as Gabri and Xavi, as the midfielder hit
the bar, could have sentenced the match.
AFTER THE MATCH
Deportivo did all they can, and played a good match, but found a great
opponent in front of them. Barcelona seem to have been recovered from some
years of deception after they won their sixth consecutive Liga match, this
time in Riazor. Besides, it was their first win in La Coruna since January 4,
1997 when a Pizzi goal was enough to beat Deportivo 0-1.
The thing is that earlier that night Valencia were beaten at Espanyol (0-1)
while even Celta could dominate a match in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid.
Unfortunately the team of Quieroz bounced back to win 4-2, but all this
indicated that the top teams of the Liga are beatable. Unfortunately it
concerned Deportivo also.
Instead of climbing near the top, and taking the second place, Deportivo
remain third and see Barcelona closing in on just four points now. Valencia
are second with 51 points and occupy the place that gives a right to enter
the Champions League directly. Deportivo and Barcelona respectively have 50
points and 46 points and occupy places that give the right to play pre-round
Champions League matches. The next match of Deportivo will be on Saturday
at Valencia, meaning that another opportunity will arise to conquer the
second place. Three days later Juventus will be waiting in Italy.
