[訪問] Pandiani:I just want to be treated like Tristan
The match against Barcelona on Sunday showed once more that Walter
Pandiani is a top striker in the Spanish Liga as he scored two amazing
headers against the men of Frank Rijkaard. But at Deportivo he faces
the competition of Diego Tristan, who despite his poor form still has
the confidence of Irureta. And it didn’t help him then when he scored
8 goals in 8 consecutive matches from 31 August until 4 October. On
Saturday the Uruguayan striker could get another chance to prove his
worth against a player like Ayala.
Q: How was it like to score two goals and to lose on Sunday?
A: It was a bad thing because we lost three important points at a crucial
moment in the Liga. It was sad to see us missing opportunities we created
as we could have drawn or won that match. Anyway, I cannot deny than I am
satisfied about having scored two goals after I hadn’t scored for a while
(the previous goal of Pandiani was against Real Madrid on 14 December). I
hope that with these goals I become a starter again.
Q: Which goal against Barcelona did you like most?
A: The first one because it was much more difficult. It was a good cross
of Romero, but I was in a complicated position. Nevertheless, I think I
did well when hitting it.
Q: Are there other players in the Liga which are better in offensive heading?
A: That’s difficult to answer, although I know I am among the best headers
in Spain. But I only think about using crosses well and to score goals.
Q: What have those goals done for your position at the club?
A: I don’t know. It doesn’t matter to judge whether Tristan is doing
better or I do, as he is a starter and I just want people to value my work.
I only want to be treated like Tristan, to be treated as every other
player. The thing is that Diego doesn’t have fine form and I assumed
I would get more opportunities. But I still will have to be more patient
and to wait for my opportunity.
Q: Will you be disappointed if you don’t start the match against Valencia?
A: Yes, because I expect that on Saturday I will start another good scoring
period at Deportivo. Of course I would like to be a starter against Valencia.
But even more against Juventus because of all that match means to us..
Q: What’s your opinion about the debate that Deportivo aren’t efficient
enough?
A: I don’t think it’s a fair debate when people say that Deportivo
don’t have strikers, only because Diego hasn’t scored recently. People
treat Diego in a bad way because he isn’t playing well. But I think we
should help him to get out of his bad period.
Q: What’s your experience when playing against Valencia?
A: One of them is my debut with Mallorca. But especially the first match
against them with Deportivo in Riazor comes to me mind. The score was 0-0
when I headed the 1-0 before Ayala could do something.
Q: How do you evaluate Ayala?
A: He’s very experienced and he’s always well positioned. In the air
he’s one of the best defenders in the world.
