REVIEW: VALENCIA 3 – DEPORTIVO 0 (LIGA)
Deportivo went down 3-0 at the Mestalla against second placed Valencia
although the final score was exaggerated. It was a critical match in the
fight for the Liga title and Deportivo played a good match. Despite being
with ten man for most part of the match, as Mauro Silva was sent off after
twenty minutes, the Galicians created several good chances but as usual
weren’t effective enough. Valencia added two injury-time goals to complete
the miserable night for Deportivo.
FIRST HALF
The match had just started as the referee already indicated that again
the man in black would be a crucial factor. Romero and Vicente fought a
duel near the area when the Valencia dived to the ground. To the astonishment
of the Deportivo players the referee consulted his linesman and gave the home
team a penalty. Also, Romero was booked for the ‘foul’. The Deportivo
players became furious and the referee needed four minutes to confirm his
own decision. Justice was done when the weak effort of Baraja was stopped
by Molina as Jorge Andrade, like in the match at Albacete, cleared the
ball after it.
Although Deportivo pressed a lot and created numerous chances to score,
suddenly the match was turned around. In a difficult situation Mauro Silva
tackled Aimar in the box and the referee this time was right to give a
penalty. Although it’s according to the rules, Mauro Silva was sent off
for this foul with a direct red card. But again the referee ruled 200
percent against Deportivo because in most matches referees don’t dare
to do both: giving a penalty and a red card.
But what an irony as minutes before Valencia defender Marchena prevented
Valeron by using, without purpose, his arm. According to the rules that
still should be a penalty kick and red card. Was it awarded? Anyway, it
became clear that this just wasn’t going to night of Deportivo. Vicente
converted the penalty kick and so Valencia took a 1-0 lead.
Nevertheless, despite playing with ten men Deportivo didn’t seem affected
as especially Sergio and Valeron took the initiative of the match. Valencia
had problems controlling it and looked very nervous. The emotions continued
as Vicente hit the bar and Aimar had to go off with an injury and was being
substituted by striker Juan Sanchez.
SECOND HALF
With ten men Deportivo were able to dominate the second half also and
scoring a goal would have been deserved. But again the team wasn’t
effective enough in front of the goal. A sign of the dominance displayed
by Deportivo was when the home crowd turned in protest against their own
team. The Valencia players started to foul even more although the referee
didn’t do much against it.
The end of the match became very intense as Valencia looked to break down.
But instead they grabbed two late goals that put the final score of 3-0 on
the table. First it was Vicente who scored his second goal of the night
and in the dying seconds Juan Sanched added a third. It was the final of a
night the team should forget soon.
AFTER MATCH
The second Liga defeat in a row means that Deportivo are 99 percent out
of the title race. The team suffered six goals against Barcelona and
Valencia and that’s just too much to be a serious candidate for the
title. But there’s also good news to bring. In both matches against
Spanish top teams Deportivo were superior but on both occasions weren’t
effective enough. Against Barcelona a 0-3 setback could have overcome
while against Valencia the team dominated despite playing with ten men.
It was the first direct red card of Mauro Silva in 12 years of Liga
football. This despite this defensive role and long career in Spain.
Before this sending-off he was expelled on five occasions, including
against Villarreal earlier this season.
