MOLINA THE ONLY KEEPER
MOLINA THE ONLY KEEPER
Only one of the top seven teams will play at home this weekend, and
it is none other than the current leaders Real Madrid who will welcome
Sevilla in the last match on Sunday, giving them a perfect chance to
put some distance between them and the other title hopefuls. Deportivo
have arguably the most difficult task among the top four teams, as
they will face Real Sociedad at the Anoeta, in the first match of the
weekend. Valencia will play at Racing Santander, whereas Barcelona
will want to forget their UEFA Cup exit when they meet Betis.
Depor will have to shake down some demons of their own, after the 4 - 1
defeat at the San Siro. Capdevila admitted that the defeat affected
the morale of the players, but the men of Javier Irureta should no
longer be distracted by the Champions League campaign, even more because
two of the three teams above them are playing away. With Real Madrid
playing at home, it is clear that Depor have no other option than a win,
in order to keep their title hopes alive. Three points at the Anoeta
would also put pressure on Barcelona and Valencia, who will play on
Sunday. But some opposition can be expected from Real Sociedad, who are
14th in the table, few points away from the relegation zone. On the other
hand, Socidedad have no other objective than to survive in the Liga. They
are far away from the UEFA Cup places, with no other objectives in reach.
But Sociedad will want to take revenge for the absurd match against
Deportivo at the Riazor. Nihat opened the score, and Sociedad seemed to
be cruising to victory, only for the unlucky Jauregui to score twice in
his own net, and give Depor an unlikely win.
Deportivo have almost their entire squad available for this match, the
only problem being the goalkeeper position. Molina is available, but none
of his substitutes are. Munua is away on international duty, while
Songo'o underwent surgery earlier this week. Deportivo's keeper will thus
have to be very careful, an injury would leave Depor in an awkward and
difficult situation. Sociedad face more serious squad problems. De Pedro
returns after an injury, and has also announced that he will leave the
club at the end of the season (a move also linked to Deportivo), while
Xabi Alonso and Gabilondo are expected to return to training today, after
being injured. Valery Karpin will also play after travelling home to
Estonia for a funeral.
Both teams have had an unsatisfying season so far, with Sociedad never
regaining the form that almost brought them the Liga title last year, and
Deportivo lacking much needed regularity. Unfortunately, Deportivo's title
hopes are already dependening on the other results, and the importance
of this match will only be clear after the last game of the matchday.
