[訪問] LUQUE: "I AM THANKFUL TO IRURETA"
LUQUE: "I AM THANKFUL TO IRURETA"
Catalan winger Albert Luque has just finished his second season at
Deportivo after he was signed in the summer of 2002. The recent season
has made Luque shine in the Liga and Europe and as a positive
consequence he has been picked for the Spain squad playing the EURO 2004
tournament. But Luque would have liked to have played the Champions League
final this Wednesday.
Q: Do you still think about that match against Porto?
A: Yes, I have to admit I do. We were so close... No, I cannot forget
it. On Wednesday I will feel it again because we were just one match
away from playing the final. We were so close... It was my dream to
play the Champions League final.
Q: What did Deportivo fail to do?
A: We didn't score goals so it was impossible to win. We hadn't our
best form. A player always must look forward again, but it was a very
sad moment for us.
Q: Have you ever seen back that match against Milan?
A: Yes I have, many times. It was a perfect match and an example how
to approach a game. And my goal was the one I have celebrated most
in my career. When I closed in on Dida I had some time to think, but I
picked the right corner and it proved to be our decisive goal.
Q: How did you learn to shoot with so much strength?
A: Because of my dad, as he always let me work hard on it. He drew
signs on a wall and my job was to hit them.
Q: It seems you don't need your right leg anymore...
A: Yes, because I had focussed so much on my left leg I forgot about
the right one. I used to concentrate on my right leg, but my dad forced
me to use my left one. Now I always play with my left leg, but I write
with my right hand. I still have to work on shooting with my right leg.
Q: How about heading?
A: Yes, on that aspect too. But well, playing at the wing I don't need
to head many balls. It's something one doesn't note at the left.
Q: How did you experience your transformation?
A: Irureta had his mind made up and thought I could help the team from
this position. I had doubts, and my colleagues also had. It was something
new... But now I must thank Irureta for his idea.
Q: Didn't you agree with him?
A: It took some time. I always had played as a centre striker, close to
the opposing goalie. But playing at the wing has complicated many things.
Now I must help the defence more, to cross the field towards the other
end and to provide crosses... I always liked to score goals and I felt
strange not scoring that much anymore. But that has changed as I have
noted how I can help the team more.
Q: Switching positions has helped you entering the Spain squad.
A: Yes, and I am full of illusion.
Q: Reyes hasn't been picked...
A: But he can be relaxed because he has so many qualities. He's quick
and very mature for his age. By signing at Arsenal he made a big leap
towards a club where a win is a must. But for sure Arsenal will enjoy
having him.
Q: At Deportivo the left defender helps when attacking. But during
matches of Spain this isn't happening. What do you prefer?
A: I prefer the defender staying at the back, because I like to attack.
I have troubles defending and when the back passes by me we run big risks.
Q: How about the opposing defender?
A: I am better in long runs than shorter ones. So I prefer defenders
who defend aggressively as I can pass them when they approach me. But
defenders now know me and it's more difficult to do this. I am
encountering more problems...
Q: Did you expect to deliver good crosses?
A: When I was put at this position I was worried more about other aspects,
as I have a lot of confidence in my left leg. I was really worried about
the defensive aspect.
Q: Even your former colleague Eto'o doesn't really understand you...
A: Yes, he has told me about the defensive aspect and he was right.
But Eto'o is the best friend I have ever had and we understood each
other very well on the pitch. He was my Valeron at Mallorca.
Q: It's evident that Valeron is your favourite player at the team.
A: He always brings the best in other players to the foreground.
And he always plays close to me, always is offering his services. And
he's a saint, never blames others. I admire him both on and off the pitch.
Q: How come problems at Deportivo stay in the dressing room?
A: Our dressing room is an easy one. There have been some minor
problems, some tension... but they never leave the dressing room.
Q: And Irureta seems forgiving...
A: Yes, because he knows one can have a bad day and enter into a
discussion, but the next day to have a normal session... For the sake
of the team these things have to be forgotten.... That's a good thing
about Irureta: one can have a discussion with him, but it's forgotten
after it and all get back to work.
Q: You didn't got along well with Luis Aragones.
A: Luis approaches problems in a completely different way. One has
to 'fight' with him with harsh words.
Q: What do you prefer?
A: Both coaches know how to get the best out of their teams. Under
Luis we achieved the best ever position with Mallorca and entered
the Champions League. Under Irureta we achieved new things at Deportivo.
I have served well under both coaches.
Q: Who's a key player at Deportivo?
A: There are important players like Naybet and Valeron. But the most
important one is Mauro Silva, both in the dressing room as on the pitch.
He always is prepared to help.
Q: And at the Spanish squad?
A: For me it's Raul. He has been playing for many years at the highest
level and we respect him a lot. He has a lot of character and always
responds when he is needed. He's something like an example for all players.
Q: How about achieving something with the Spanish team?
A: We were close in Corea... But well, together with Italy and France
we're favourites to win the tournament.
Q: What has been the worst remark you have heard recently?
A: When people said I already had signed at Barcelona and that I was
playing for them wearing the shirt of Deportivo. But I am a man of my
word and haven't signed at any other club.
Q: How about your feelings towards Barcelona?
A: I have played there for eighth years and was formed there as a player
and as a person. Every fifteen days I went to Nou Camp and I am Catalan.
Barcelona is a a special club for me and I wish them the best of luck.
But I am a player of Deportivo.
Q: Will you return one day?
A: One never knows. I have still six years of contract left at Deportivo
and I have a good time here. Lendoiro really wanted to have me and I
thank him for that. If one day I will leave it will have to be a good
deal for me and for Depor. Barcelona would be a nice destination.
Q: Why did you have to leave Barcelona? Because of your association
with Cruyff?
A: I don't know, but it's true that I had a friendship with Bruins,
the assistant coach of Cruyff. When they had to leave I had to go too.
Now I am happy about it.
Q: Are you really saying it had to do with each other?
A: No I am not. But well, it happened in the same year.
Q: Milan are also interested in signing you...
A: Yes, but I don't find it very attractive. One never knows, but I
don't like the idea. I would be complicated for my style of playing
because Italian footballl is very defensive.
Q: How about your activities besides football? Do you like visiting
discotheques?
A: Me? I don't go out a lot. And when I do I like to enjoy my time with
others... After winning a match on Saturday and when not having a match
midweek, it's a nice way to enjoy.
Q: Do players take care of themselves?
A: A player knows how to behave and it's evident that going out a lot
could be negative. But I am a responsible person and do what I want to do.
Q: Do you think your private life is monitored?
A: Yes, a little bit. But not much compared to the players of Madrid.
They wouldn't have all that if they would be playing well. It has to do
with Beckham that all this gets more attention.
Q: What has happened to Real Madrid?
A: Their squad isn't balanced and it's a small one. In the first months
they were very effective, especially upfront. But playing with the same
players has made them paying the price. Although they haven't won a
single title they still have some of the best players. Every three days
the best is asked from them and usually they respond.
Q: Do you consider yourself a Pavon, Galactivo or middle-class player?
A: A middle-class one.
Q: So you won't ever play at Real Madrid?
A: No, because I support Barcelona.
(XD)
Q: Finally: where were you during the notorious penalty kick of Djukic?
A: I was watching the match of Barcelona with my dad in the Nou Camp. I
remember very well that we were waiting for the result of Deportivo. At
that time I was very happy. But for the supporters of Deportivo it was
very tough. Now let's focus on winning the Champions League...
