Shelbourne FC were founded in 1895 and since then have acquired a good
collection of trophies. Currently, the Irish club are considered the
best team of the Eircom League and in total they have conquered ten
national leagues, seven cup tournaments, one league cup and four
President cups. But now they are after a bigger objective: to be the
first Irish club to qualify for the Champions League.
A place in the Champions League would be a remarkable achievement
though, as in their more than 100 years of history the club have won
only four matches in Europe. Out of a total of forty matches, these
victories were achieved against Belenenses from Portugal (1964),
Karpatiy Lvov from Ukraine (1993), Sloga from Macedonia (2000) and
in their most recent match against Hajduk Split from Croatia (2004).
The history of Shelbourne is similar to that of other Irish teams
in Europe, although 2004 is breaking records. The qualification of
Shelbourne for the third Champions League pre-round, after having
eliminated KR Reykjavik and Hadjuk Split, is the best ever
achievement for a Irish team in Europe. Only the performances of
Dundalk in 1979 can be compared, as back then this club won two
successive rounds in the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
That's the reason why the qualification of Shelbourne caused a
huge celebration in Ireland, and the win against the Croatian
champions was undoubtedly the biggest moment in the 109-year
history of Shelbourne. This success may earn them about €500,000
in the long run; also, their triumph has been taken as a massive
vote of confidence for the whole Irish football. Now the enthusiasm
is increasing and the club announced the decision of moving the
match against Deportivo from Tolka Park to Lansdowne Road in order
to take advantage of the capacity of this stadium (42,000).
Shelbourne are at the top of the Eircom league with 41 points after
having achieved eleven victories, eight draws and only two defeats.
Without any star player, the team has as their main weapon the
excellent physical shape of their strikers and the good aerial game
of the entire squad. The overall strategy of the Irish club is very
similar to the one used by Deportivo: they cause a lot of pressure
in midfield and chase the ball every time they lose the control of
it. The team is coached by Pat Fenlon, who prefers using a 4-4-2
formation.
The most important player of the team is Owen Heary, who is their
captain and one of best defenders in the squad. Midfielder Stuart Byrne
and young striker Jason Byern are other men to take notice of. Also,
it's important to remember Glen Fitzpatrick and Alan Moore. Both
players scored the goals in the 3-2 defeat against Hadjuk Split in
Croatia. The latest reinforcement of the Irish club is Joseph Cyrille Ndo,
a player who was part of the Cameroon squad which participated at the
last two World Cups.
One of the possibilities considered by coach Pat Fenlon is changing
the 4-4-2 system to a 4-2-3-1 formation for the match against the
Galicians. The idea is to use Ger McCarthy or Ndo in midfield,
replacing striker Fitzpatrick. This means that the probable team
against Deportivo will be formed by goalkeeper Williams (29), Rogers (28)
and Harris (25) as central defenders, Heary (27) and Crawley (27) on
the defensive sides, Stuart Byrne (27) as the the shadow of Valeron,
Alan Moore (29) as his partner in midfield, Cahill (28) working at the
left wing, Ger McCarthy (25) at the right and Hoolahan (21) behind
Jason Byrne (25), who will be the only Irish striker for this game.
