MARCUS ASSUNCAO IS THE NEW TARGET FOR LENDOIRO

Friday 1st April, 2005
The Betis midfielder has come under the attention of Lendoiro after several
good matches against Deportivo. Now the midfielder has established himself as
one of the best in La Liga, and more clubs are interested in his services,
although Deporitvo are considered to be in pole position.
THERE IS ROOM FOR ANOTHER MIDFIELDER
There are already three defensive mifielders set to play next season for
Deportivo. Duscher and Sergio will continue at the club, while Canadian de
Guzman will also join the squad during the summer. But with the certain
retirement of Mauro Silva, there would still be a position to be filled,
making Marcos Assunçao a very good alternative.
The midfielder is part of the Betis team that made life hard for Deportivo in
the past seasons. Especially in this one, the Galicians have only earned one
point in the two encounters against Betis, and Assunçao's team are currently
in third place, a direct rival of Deportivo for the Champions League
positions. He already scored eight goals in La Liga this season, the same
amount as Diego Tristan and one less than Luque.
LENDOIRO HAS YET TO MAKE AN OFFER
Even though there are good reasons to transfer Assunçao, Lendoiro is being
very cautious. Depor's participation in the next Champions League is far from
being certain, and the transfer of the Brazilian is conditioned by the
qualification for an European campaign. The price tag of the midfielder is
also relatively high for a player in his late twenties, namely above the five
million euro mark. This is the amount that Betis' president Lopera paid for
his services to AS Roma in the summer of 2002. Another aspect is the
nationality of the player. He has already requested a Spanish passport,
otherwise no team would be able to use him in the Primera, except for a newly
promoted one with less foreigners.
RENTING IS THE FUTURE OF FOOTBALL, ACCORDING TO LENDOIRO
In the event that Depor do not qualify for an European campaign, is seems
that Lendoiro is determined to go the way of renting players. It is his plan
to reenforce the team for the centenario, and the current economic situation
of the club does not offer many solutions. This is the reason why Lendoiro
has already made contact with GSA, one of the three major players in this
branche along side GSI and MSI.
Renting is a way for clubs to benefit of a players services without actually
buying him. A contract is signed for one, two or more seasons, and the club
must pay the player's salary and a rent to the owner, in this case the
renting company. The club usually has an option to buy the player during this
time and the rent would be discounted from the original price. Lendoiro is
particularly interested in this kind of bussiness, because it does not
include the usual risks of buying a player. A club can test the player
thoroughly and decide later to buy him or not.
If Lendoiro decides to rent players for the centenario, Deportivo would
become the first team in Spain to promote this bussiness model. Although in
countries like Italy, Argentina, Brazil or Portugal this is already common
practice, with teams like Corinthians, Porto or Chelsea renting players,
Spain has yet to embrace the idea.
