Friday 22nd April, 2005 -- In a surprise move, Atletico Madrid have unofficia -lly offered no less than twelve million euros and three players for Albert Luque. Although there is no confirmation from either club, it seems that the team form the capital is determined to buy the left winger. With Barcelona also renewing their interest in their former youth player, it seems that Luque might leave Deportivo at the end of the season. ATLETICO HAVE MADE A SERIOUS OFFER It seems that Deportivo is not the only team looking to rebuild for the next season. The officials of Atletico Madrid are discontent with the ninth posi- tion currently occupied by the team from the capital and want to reenforce the team during the summer. The first offer they made was for Deportivo's Albert Luque, considered to be the ideal striking partner for Fernando Torres. Luque's father and agent visited the offices at the Vicente Calder鏮 yesterday, in order to analyze the bid of the Madrilean club. It seems that they are ready to give twelve million euros and three players (to be chosen from a group of seven) in exchange for Luque. Among the players offered is Ibagaza (2 goals and 2 assists in this Liga), one of the stars of Atletico. BARCELONA ARE ALSO IN THE RACE The Catalans have repeatedly stated their interested in Albert Luque, but have so far been unable to make a serious bid for the player. Last year it was clear that the transfer of Eto'o has priority, and the financial implications left Barcelona with insufficient funds to make bid for Luque. Still, president Joan Laporta promised the player that another attempt at his tranfer will be made during the summer. The young winger stated his desire to play for Barce- lona several times, even more now that he would join his "brother" Eto'o in attack. It remains to be seen if Barcelona can compete with the bid of Atletico, and if the player will have a say in the forseeable negotiations. One thing is clear though, the relations between Depor and Barcelona are cold. The secretive nature of last year's attempt to transfer Luque have upset Lendoiro. Even more, it has upset the fans of Deportivo who have repeatedly questioned Luque's loyalty towards the club that brought him into the spot- light. LUQUE IS NOT FOR SALE, NORMALLY The former Mallorca player has had an excellent yield at Deportivo during the past two seasons. After playing only a few times during his first season at Deportivo, Luque managed to establish himself as a starter afterwards. Since his arrival in 2002, he played 102 times in La Liga, 31 Champions League matches and 4 times in the Copa del Rey, scoring a total of 33 goals (25 in the Primera, 4 in the Champions League and 4 in the Spanish Cup). He was also called up for the Spanish national team several times, especially after Vicente got injured. In the current Liga season he scored 10 goals, becoming the top scorer of Deportivo. For all these reasons, Luque is among the few players that Lendoiro wants to keep in the team for the centenario. The others players considered indispens- able are Andrade, Valeron, Sergio and Coloccini. But Depor are in a tight corner, they must rebuild the team and they will probably miss the next Champions League, meaning that Lendoiro is desperately looking for funds. The probable transfer of Pandiani will probably bring in 5 million euros, and players like Cesar, Pablo Amo or even Tristan could also be sold at the end of the season.
