DEPORTIVO HAVE STARTED THE SEASON 2003/2004
On Sunday night at 20h00 the new season started for Deportivo, beginning with
the usual training session in Riazor. On Monday the squad will have travelled
to Vilalba in Galicia, where the team will do their actual preparation for
the season 2003/2004.
About 8,000 supporters were present to see 27 players to enter the pitch, as
were missing Djalminha, Pandiani, Lionel Scaloni and Fernando while Jesus
Munoz (at Zaragoza) and Abreu (at America) are loaned out. All players missing
had the permission of the club to do so.
Of course most attention was focused on Dutch striker Roy Makaay, who (as
promised) had returned to Riazor to be with his colleagues. His wish to leave
Deportivo this summer still hasn’t been fulfilled, and at the moment he will
be focusing on his fifth season at the club. Still a part of the crowd
accompanied his actions with whistling.
For his part, coach Javier Irureta started his sixth season at Deportivo. After
the first training session he commented that he would like to have both Makaay
and Tristan for next season. “I would love to count on both, but let’s see if
that’s possible. Good teams always have players like these in their squads.
And as they have been together for three seasons now, this time it should also
be possible to have them in one squad”.
At the moment the pre-season will look like this: On 25 July there will be a
friendly at Racing Vilalbes, while on 30 July the Trofeo Juan Acuna will be
disputed between Deportivo and Porto in Riazor. The Teresa Herrera tournament
will take place on 4-6 August, with participating teams Nacional, America and
San Lorenzo. On 12 or 13 August there will be the first Champions League
pre-round match.
