IRURETA FEARS ROSENBORG
Basque coach Javier Irureta will be coach of Deportivo for a sixth season in a
row, a personal record and one for the club too. Besides, 53-years old Irureta
will be the most experienced coach in Spain this season after 515 matches in
the Primera Division.
Q: Would you have imagined before being coach for six seasons in La Coruna?
A: I assumed that I would be here for two seasons, but the circumstances made
me continue here. It's an indication that everything has gone well and that
people have confidence in me.
Q: But as usual, the first stage at Vilalba and again too many players
A: It’s like it always is, a small difficulty especially because we’re in a
more hurry now because of the Champions League matches. But it isn’t that bad.
I just will see and decide which players will stay and which ones not.
Q: At least you know them all…
A: Yes. And therefore I know what each player can bring.
Q: And the players know you too.
A: (smiling) For some that will be positive and for others more negative. But
that’s life. Players having played a lot will think of the positive aspects
while the others won’t be that satisfied.

Q: Do all players start at zero?
A: No, as the past experience also counts. But the pre-season has always made
me think otherwise about at least one player.
Q: The same players, but also the same system?
A: I am studying some schedules a the moment, but still it’s not done yet.
Q: No new players have signed yet.
A: I have talked to the president about it, and indicated where I think we need
improvements… But I assume there will be some movements these days. We have
already a big squad and we should use it.
Q: You seem to be satisfied already.
A: I am with this squad, but everything can be improved. The players know
eachother, but one can always try to improve the performances. Our strength is
in the team but, I repeat, every squad can be improved.
Q: Your ideal number of players keeps being 23?
A: Yes, as we are in three competitions I use this number. I always hope to
have a good B-team at Deportivo and to reduce this number. But with them being
in the Tercera Division…
Q: Makaay, Tristan or both?
A: That’s a handicap, as we’re working with both of them although within some
days either Makaay or Tristan will leave. But I work with the players I have
available. They have been together for three seasons, and in football one has
to use opportunities because returning to the team is always difficult. And
with playing Champions League football we cannot just count on one or two
strikers.
Q: When do you want to have the squad finished?
A: Before the first pre-round Champions League matches. This doesn’t mean that
changes can’t be made after it. But I want to have the fundamental players
before this date.
Q: What do you know about the possible Champions League opponents?
A: I fear the physical aspect of Rosenborg but I know not much of Bohemians.
The Irish team are seventh of eighth in their domestic league I think. But in
my opinion the Norwegian team has the best possibilities to win the second
pre-round and at this moment they’re superior to us in a physical way. They
have already played about 13 league matches and will play another Champions
League qualifiers, and therefore they will be better prepared than us.
