Deportivo could not overcome Mexican club America in the first match of the
LVIII edition of the Teresa Herrera tournament, which this time will be played
in a triangular format.
The home team demonstrated a higher match rhythm than the one displayed last
Wednesday against Porto (0-2), as especially the first half was good with an
exceptional Valeron. But in the end the team could not do better than to draw
against America that came back twice.
Deportivo went ahead with a goal from Valeron after 17 minutes. The playmaker
of Depor, the master of their gamn, received good help from Mauro Silva near
the edge of the America penalty box and surprised Adolfo Rios with a quick
volley.
The Mexican team replied instantly and drew level through the Uruguayan
Sebastian Abreu. The America striker, on loan from Deportivo, beat Juanmi
(in his first pre-season game) with a header after a cross from Franky Oviedo.
Out of respect to the Deportivo crowd he didn’t want to celebrate it.

However, the joy for Leo Beenhakker's team did not last long as they conceded
their second goal of the night after a defensive error by Alvaro Ortiz. The
defender was unlucky enough to score an own goal from a Manuel Pablo cross.
In the second half Deportivo had the chance to go further ahead, but Valeron
was not fortunate with a shot after a brilliant personal play. Instead,
America levelled the score for the second time after 68 minutes, with it
putting the final score on the board. Torres shot from the left side of the
penalty box and beat Juanmi, although with a deflection from Jesus Mendoza.
In the end Abreu had two good opportunities to score the winner, but he failed
twice against Juanmi.
Deportivo coach Irureta had difficulties accepting to lose Makaay just before
this match. “We lose a great goalscorer, but have to accept it. A Golden Boot
winner, but the responsibility now is upon the players still here”. His
comments on the match itself were: “I am satisfied, although we lacked
pressure and speed at certain moment. We should improve these aspects, but we
will do this week”.
After the match America won the penalty shoot-out by four goals to three as
Capdevila and Lionel Scaloni missed for Deportivo. Tonight (21h30) will see the
match between America and Nacional de Montevideo while Deportivo will play the
third (and final) match of the tournament on Wednesday against Nacional.
