REVIEW: ROSENBORG 0 - DEPORTIVO 0 (CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, THIRD PRE-ROUND)
The first match of Deportivo in this season, the vital away one at Rosenborg,
finished how it started: 0-0. Overall a good result for the team as Rosenborg
had the best chances although were denied by an excellent performance of
Molina. The return match will be played on August 26 and a win of the Galician
team will get them into the Champions League.
Before the match it was assumed that Rosenborg were better prepared, as their
competition is already well on its way. Their form is fine, as they lead their
Liga with eleven points, and Rosenborg could count on the home advantage
against Deportivo. But only in the final fifteen minutes the differences in
physical aspects became clear as Deportivo had to fall back.
The first moments of the match were meant for Deportivo to suppress the
pressure of Rosenborg and to cope with their desire to score an early goal.
And it worked as the Lerkendal Stadium noticed that Rosenborg couldn't create
much danger in front of Molina and desperately tried to surprise with high
crosses.
After 10 minutes Deportivo slowly took over the match although they would not
create much danger. Meanwhile, Deportivo were lucky when Mauro Silva lost
possession on the edge of his own area, allowing striker Harald Brattbakk to
shoot. But although his shot beat Molina it rolled wide. Deportivo had to wait
until the thirtieth minute when Amavisca had an opportunity. The ball came to
him via Valeron and Tristan, but the winger missed the target.
This was more or less a sign to Rosenborg to do something back again and they
completely dominated the final fifteen minutes before the break. Karadas had
two excellent opportunities to open the score, but was first denied by Molina
and then by Jorge Andrade. Deportivo survived these tense moment and reached
the break without damage.
After the break Deportivo took control of the match, although again without
creating much harm to Rosenborg. Not much was seen of Diego Tristan, although
one had to admit that he didn't have much help last night. Only when Pandiani
entered the team looked more aggressive.
Rosenborg tried again to put pressure on Deportivo but lacked the class to
create chances. Still Molina had to act once in a while to keep a clean sheet.
Molina was also the target of a nasty tackle by Karadas. The Norwegian player
was shown the yellow card for his action, one of the six shown in this match.
