TRISTAN: "I LIKE ZIDANE, BUT VALERON IS THE BEST"
Deportivo need his goals more than ever, especially against Rosenborg on
Wednesday. And already legendary are the words of Diego Tristan of this summer:
"It's Makaay or me". Now it's up to the Andalucian striker to show his worth,
and Tristan himself is confident that he can do it. In fact, he wants to
become the Liga Pichichi again and to win titles with Deportivo and Spain.
Q: Tell us: did you speak to Betis president Lopera this summer at Chipiona?
A: At Chipiona I only was to celebrate my holidays, and I didn't meet him. I
just wanted to take a rest with my family, and with Lopera I didn’t even drink
a beer…. (smiling)
Q: You would have been a great ‘media’ signing for Betis…
A: There’s a lot of talking about these ‘media’ signings, but I don’t like
it. I don’t consider myself a media-type player.
Q: Do you get motivated by Irureta’s words to you?
A: It’s normal that when a journalist asks the coach about me that he
responds. But I won’t get into a discussion with him.
Q: There’s a lot at stake for Deportivo on Tuesday, but the pre-season hasn’t
been good so far.
A: Well, Deportivo always respond at the most important moments. There’s
nothing to win in friendlies. I am confident that on Tuesday we won’t fail.

Q: Deportivo haven’t signed any player while Makaay is gone. Does your team
have chances in this Liga?
A: In the past seasons there were signings and that’s why we have a great
squad now. In fact, I don’t think many teams have a squad like ours. Our
supporters should identify with this team because it has given them a lot of
joy. And I think we’ll repeat that this season.
Q: Inaki Saez and Javier Irureta want goals. Can you deliver them?
A: I know that when I play a lot I will be fighting again for the Pichichi
trophy. So everybody can be relaxed, because I am confident that I will score a
lot of goals this season. It’s a trophy every striker would like to win and I
already did two years ago. What I want now is to win titles with Deportivo and
with the Spanish national team.
Q: Who will be the most decisive player in the Liga?
A: I think the ones like always, like Ronaldo and Zidane. I like the latter
although the best is still Valeron. And I have the feeling that he also will be
scoring more goals this season. Most surprising player could be Jesus Perera,
who last season was Pichichi of the Segunda division.
Q: What about players like Fernando Torres and Reyes?
A: They’re doing well and they’re great players. But the media is giving them
a lot of attention and I hope it doesn’t get into their heads. Because if they
continue doing what they do now I am sure that they will achieve a lot.
Q: What about the situation of Djalminha?
A: As a friend and his colleague I think it’s a uncertain en nasty situation.
I ask for the problem to be solved as soon as possible because Djalma doesn’t
deserve to be in a situation like this.
