It’s now nor never; do or die for Deportivo. On Tuesday night the team will
have to win against Rosenborg to get a pass to the first official round of the
Champions League for the season 2003/2004. A draw will only be enough if it’s
a 0-0 and Deportivo will win in extra-time or on penalties. But for sure must
players would want to avoid this thriller scenario.

Participation in the Champions League is very important for the prestige of the
club and the players while it would boost the financial situation of both. Not
playing Champions League football will take away at least 15 million Euro for
the club while it will eliminate some illusion among the player. So it’s clear
what’s at stake tonight.

Coach Irureta and his players are aware of these facts and have been
concentrated in Vilalba the past days. So the team will be focussed and
motivated, but will they score goals against the firm Norwegian defence?
Against the three teams of some calibre against which Deportivo have played
this pre-season, no goals were scored against Rosenborg, Porto and Atletico
de Madrid. In fact, the team lost both home matches against Porto (0-2) and
Atletico (0-1).

The responsibility to score goals will come to Diego Tristan, who in
cooperation with Juan Valeron will have to make forget Roy Makaay. The Dutch
striker scored nine Champions League goals last season while also claiming the
Spanish Pichichi trophy. Albert Luque and Walter Pandiani are two other players
in the squad who will have to be sharp tonight.
Diego Tristan confirmed that “we’re playing half of the season tonight
against Rosenborg. But I don’t worry about the goals, because they will come.
We all want to score goals, but most important is how the team will be doing.
On a personal level, I haven’t played for three months and that one notes. But
I feel fine and am getting better every day”.

The biggest doubt for Irureta is whether he can count of goalkeeper Molina. He
copes with a slight muscle injury and isn’t one hundred percent fit. He
didn’t finish the training session on Monday and Irureta recognizes that “he
still has some pain”. Today Irureta will decide whether he will have Molina or
Juanmi in goal of Deportivo. The coach commented that “I don’t have the
intention to let someone play who’s injured. But let’s see how things are on
Tuesday. Besides, Jaime is sick and didn’t participate with the group on
Monday”.

Another doubt is the right wing, as both Hector and Manuel Pablo seem to have
the same chances to play. The rest of the defence is the usual one with Jorge
Andrade and Naybet in the centre and Romero on the left. In fact, with the
names of Victor Sanchez, Mauro Silva, Sergio, Fran, Valeron and Tristan the
team of tonight won’t have surprises.
Irureta commented that “the only thing I know about tonight’s match is that
it won’t be easy at all because they’re a dangerous team. It will be a match
with hard work and they will want to frustrate our game. Whoever thinks it will
be simple to beat them is wrong. And that’s why I ask our supporters to be
behind us during the 90 minutes”.
Rosenborg arrived in La Coruna on Sunday night and had a training session in
Riazor last night. Their coach Aage Hereide is preparing the final details of
his team, who had a boost of moral after beating Viking Stavanger 4-1 in their
last League match. Rosenborg have lost only once in their 18 matches and this
means that their form seems to be a bit better than the home team. Their
striker Enerly, who was in the team in the first match, is out because of an
injury.
