Powering up, D-Backs sign Glaus
Third baseman agrees to four-year contract

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks added significant power to their lineup Thursday w
hen they reached agreement with free agent third baseman Troy Glaus on a four-
year, $45 million contract.
"We have stated from the outset this winter that our intention was to return t
his organization to the competitive prominence we enjoyed in the early stages
of the franchise, and the addition of a player of Troy's caliber gets us heade
d in that direction," Ken Kendrick, Arizona's managing general partner, said i
n a statement. "In addition to being one of the premier power hitters in baseb
all, Troy is coming from a winning environment in Anaheim, which will be a hug
e asset to our organization as we go forward. This announcement today is the f
irst of what we anticipate to be a busy winter for us as we prepare for the 20
05 season."
Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but the Arizona Republic reported th
at the 28-year-old Glaus, Most Valuable Player of the 2002 World Series, will
receive a $4 million signing bonus and salaries of $8.25 million in 2005, $9.2
5 million in 2006, $10.75 million in 2007 and $12.75 million in 2008.
Glaus, who has battled shoulder problems the past two seasons, hit .251 with 1
8 homers and 42 RBIs last season for the Angels. He has hit 182 home runs and
batted .253 in his Major League career.
His best season was in 2000, when he tied for the American League lead in home
runs with 47 while batting .284 and earning his first of three trips to the A
ll-Star Game. Glaus followed with a 41-homer performance in 2001, and added 30
more in Anaheim's championship season of 2002.
