D-Backs richer after Rule 5 Draft
Arizona picks up cash, unloads pitcher in draft

ANAHEIM -- After days of spending money, the Diamondbacks picked up a little d
ough in Monday's Rule 5 Draft.
By virtue of having the worst record in baseball, the D-Backs had the first pi
ck in the draft and they selected right-handed pitcher Angel Garcia from the T
wins and traded him to the Devil Rays for cash considerations.
"A number of clubs approached us over the weekend," Arizona general manager Jo
e Garagiola Jr. said. "Once we determined that there was no player that we wan
ted to take for our own account, then this made a lot of sense. It was a good
situation for us and for [Tampa]."
The D-Backs also received $12,000 when the Washington Nationals selected outfi
elder Cedric Brooks from the Arizona organization in the minor league phase of
the draft.
With newly signed pitcher Russ Ortiz having to be added to the 40-man roster S
unday, the Diamondbacks designated left-hander Shane Nance for assignment.
In order to be eligible to participate in the draft Monday, Arizona had to pai
r its roster down to 39, which it did by releasing right-hander Andrew Good.
There is still more roster maneuvering on the horizon as Arizona will have to
make room for infielders Royce Clayton and Craig Counsell. Those moves are exp
ected to be announced as soon as Tuesday.
