Toronto sends pitching prospect Peterson to Arizona By Ian Harrison / Special to MLB.com TORONTO -- In their continuing bid to replace departed slugger Carlos Delgado, the Blue Jays acquired infielder Shea Hillenbrand from the Arizona Diamondbac ks on Wednesday. Going the other way is pitching prospect Adam Peterson, the first player draft ed by Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi in the 2002 First-Year Player D raft. The deal caps a busy week for the Jays, who also signed free agent relievers B illy Koch and Scott Schoeneweis. Ricciardi said the Hillenbrand trade has been in the works for some time. "We've actually been working on it for over a month," Ricciardi said. "It's go od to have it done. We're happy to have him." The deal fell into place after Arizona inked starter Shawn Estes to a one-year deal on Tuesday night. Hillenbrand, 29, is a four-year Major Leaguer who can play first or third base . He may also see time as designated hitter. "All three of those positions are available for him to get time at," said Ricc iardi. "The most important thing is to get his bat into the lineup every day." Hillenbrand hit a career-high .310 with the D-Backs last season, with 15 homer s and 80 RBIs in 148 games. Over his career, the right-handed hitter has poste d a .288 average with 65 home runs and 309 RBIs. A 10th-round pick by Boston i n the 1996 draft, Hillenbrand was traded to Arizona in early 2003. "If you look at him the last three years, he's averaged close to .280 with 18 homers and 80 RBIs," Ricciardi said. Toronto's GM is hoping Hillenbrand and newly signed third baseman Corey Koskie can team up to fill the power void created when Delgado didn't re-sign. "If you look at both of them, they could put up 36 homers and 160 RBIs," Ricci ardi said. "We weren't looking to replace Carlos. I don't think you replace th at kind of hitter."
