D-Backs get reliever for Hillenbrand
By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com
PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks' roster reshuffling continued Wednesday as they tr
aded infielder Shea Hillenbrand to the Blue Jays for reliever Adam Peterson.
Hillenbrand, who can play first base as well as third, became expendable after
the moves Arizona has made so far this offseason. With Troy Glaus signed to p
lay third, it looked like Hillenbrand would play first and last year's third b
aseman Chad Tracy would get a look in right.
But the D-Backs were able to acquire right fielder Shawn Green earlier this we
ek and want Tracy, who is younger and less expensive than the arbitration-elig
ible Hillenbrand, to play every day at first.
Peterson, 25, started last year in Double-A, where he was 4-4 with a 2.54 ERA
and 15 saves. He made his big league debut later, appearing in three games for
the Blue Jays, tallying a 16.87 ERA before finishing the year in Triple-A.
This past fall, he limited opponents to a .205 average while pitching for Peor
ia in the Arizona Fall League. The right-hander throws hard with his fastball
reaching the upper 90s.
