Competing D-Backs may be buyers
Bullpen help tops list of club's deadline desires
PHOENIX -- Last year at this time, the Diamondbacks were among the sellers when
it came to the July trading deadline. But after an extreme offseason makeover,
the club finds itself still in the thick of the National League West race. The
Diamondbacks nearly traded Randy Johnson last July and did wind up sending
center fielder Steve Finley to the Dodgers. This year, they are in more of a
buying mode as they continue to search for bullpen help.

The approaching trading deadline doesn't mean that Joe Garagiola Jr. will be
doing anything different than he's done the last month or so, though, as
Arizona's general manager has been in regular contact with teams.

"It's not really a situation where it's anything but an ongoing effort, so I
wouldn't necessarily invest the trading deadline with any special significance,
" Garagiola said. "Our guys are out and about."

Adding to the bullpen is easier said then done. For one thing, teams are still
trying to figure out whether they are in or out of races, so there aren't a lot
of sellers at the moment. Secondly, with a host of teams also looking for
pitching help, the market is tight.

"I think this is a team that, assuming the bottom doesn't fall out, we could
very much be in contention," Garagiola said. "Does that effect our thinking?
Well, I think any time you think about potentially trading prospects, you have
to weigh a lot of things, including the player you get back. Are you renting
him for the rest of the season? Or is this someone you'll have under control
for a [longer] period of time?"

With the demand for pitching so great, the cost is steep, and the Diamondbacks
are loathe to part with the crown jewels of their farm system -- especially for
a player that can be a free agent at the end of the year.

"Would it be extremely difficult to put some of them in deals?" Garagiola asked
. "Absolutely it would, because with the one eye we have on the future, [we]
can see a future that looks pretty good."

Garagiola declined to mention specific names when it came to prospects, but it
would seem unlikely that the team would trade first baseman Conor Jackson,
right fielder Carlos Quentin or shortstop Sergio Santos. All three are at
Triple-A Tucson and have been ranked among the game's top up and comers.

"I would not single out or confirm any of that kind of stuff," Garagiola said.
"We have a lot of players that we really like and that other people like. We
know that because their names come up in repeat conversations. We have a good
handle on what these players will mean to us in the future."

With closer Brandon Lyon expected back shortly after the All-Star break and
Oscar Villarreal after that, the Diamondbacks could also decide to stand pat.

"We feel like once we get healthy again, even if we don't make a move outside
as far as a trade, we still feel like we have some people coming back that are
