To understand how quickly - and deeply - Bryan Price dived right into his new
job as Diamondbacks pitching coach, you need to talk to some of the pitchers
in the system.
It takes only a second to figure out where Price stands in most of their eyes.
"He's been unbelievable," right-hander Brandon Webb said. "He called me up
after he got the job and - I hate to admit this - but since I didn't
recognize the number, I blew it off and didn't answer the phone.
"But after I listened to the message, I called him right away. We talk all
the time and I can't wait for the season to start, so we can talk and get to
know each other even more."
After spending the past 17 seasons in the Seattle Mariners' system, the last
six as the big-league pitching coach, he was lured to Arizona by his good
friend, Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin. Within days, Price requested and
reviewed videotape of every pitcher who would be reporting to spring training.
In between, he took the time to call every one of them to introduce himself,
discuss the upcoming season, talk about expectations and to basically be a
friend.
The better he understands the pitchers in the organization, the easier it
will be to improve upon last season's team ERA (4.84), which ranked 14th in
the National League.
"I've never had a pitching coach do that before," right-hander Claudio Vargas
said of the chats with Price on the phone. "That made me feel pretty good,
sort of special, you know?"
Left-hander Brad Halsey and right-hander Dustin Nippert said almost the exact
same thing. Ditto with veteran Russ Ortiz, and he trained under the man
considered to be the Cy Young of pitching coaches - Leo Mazzone, the longtime
brains behind the Atlanta Braves' staff, who now is with the Baltimore
Orioles.
"We've been able to work real well together," Ortiz said of Price. "He said
to me, 'I'm going to be totally honest with you and I want you to be totally
honest with me. Let's not beat around the bush.' That's what I love. That's
something Leo always said, too."
Price is still trying to climb inside the minds of his pitchers to learn
everything he can. So far, they've all seemed to let him explore as he gains
their trust. To maximize his time in camp, he's called early staff workout
sessions to learn about the pitchers in closer-knit groups.
"It gives me a chance to get to know them and talk about what I feel their
strengths and weaknesses are and what they think their strengths and
weaknesses are," Price said. "That's probably been the most valuable time
I've spent here so far."
Melvin knew the value he could get out of Price after spending the 2003 and
'04 seasons with him in Seattle as the Mariners' manager.
No one will say it, but the decision to let Mark Davis go as pitching coach
after last season wasn't so much because of anything Davis did. It was
because Melvin sensed he could pry Price away from the Mariners.
Price
Price
"Mark Davis did a very credible job for us last year," Melvin said. "But
Bryan has a lot of experience. . . . For me, he's the best."
To illustrate his point, Melvin said Price doesn't play favorites.
"He makes everybody feel the same. Everybody gets treated the same," he said.
"The last guy here is treated as well as the first guy."
Talk to the pitchers, and they all seem to agree. Left-hander Randy Choate, a
non-roster invitee trying to win a spot in the bullpen, has been impressed
with Price from the start. So has closer Jose Valverde. And everyone from
Nippert to Brandon Lyon.
All of them have said Price has already helped them in one way or another,
from isolating a problem with their mechanics to just being a positive
influence and making sure they stay prepared and focused.
"He just makes you feel important," Halsey said. "It doesn't take long for
you to realize that his goals are the same as your goals. As much as we want
to become better pitchers, he's trying to make us better pitchers.
"That's what you want, somebody who's there to diagnose anything that might
be going wrong, a guy that wants to help you improve yourself because that
only helps the entire team."
