But by remaining idle and not making a single move before Monday's non-waiver trading deadline - when the rest of the National League West all made deals to try and improve - did the Diamondbacks do all they could to help their chances down the stretch? More than a few players said privately they were disappointed the club couldn't reel in a trade for a pitcher to bolster the starting rotation. That's what General Manager Josh Byrnes had targeted, and just three hours before Monday's 1 p.m. deadline, Arizona had four separate deals on the table to try to bring in pitching help. But nothing could get done. advertisement Another deal that fizzled had the Diamondbacks acquiring Oakland A's left-hander Barry Zito in a potential three-team trade, but the third team backed out and the A's held on to Zito, who also was being heavily courted by the New York Mets. Right fielder Shawn Green, whose name had been linked to trade rumors, including one that might have sent him to the Yankees before Bobby Abreu went to the Bronx, said he wasn't surprised to see the Diamondbacks stand pat. "You never know, though," Green said. "We've got a lot of talent here. Our team's been pretty streaky, and we've been playing good baseball." Asked if he felt the team needed to upgrade the starting rotation, the noted weak spot on the team, Green said, "If those guys stay healthy, there's no reason why we can't stay in this race and potentially win it. But that's the key - staying healthy." Manager Bob Melvin has said all along he'd be comfortable sticking with the players he's had and didn't change his tune. "We like our club here," he said. "We're not going to mortgage a lot of the guys we feel are going to be big parts of this thing going forward. In talking to Josh, he just felt like there wasn't the right deal out there. I know he looked . . . " But everybody else in the division looked and found. The Dodgers not only picked up third baseman Wilson Betemit, they added Cubs starting pitcher Greg Maddux and Tampa Bay infielder Julio Lugo. Los Angeles wasn't alone. The first-place Padres acquired infielder Todd Walker from the Cubs. The Rockies got left-hander Jeremy Affeldt from the Royals. And in recent days, the Giants added reliever Mike Stanton and infielder Shea Hillenbrand, a former Diamondbacks player. Other than the Maddux deal, Melvin didn't see much in the way of the moves by the NL West clubs, saying "nothing earth-shattering" occurred, such as the hot rumor of the Dodgers acquiring Washington's Alfonso Soriano. "It wasn't going to make any difference, anyway," Melvin said. "We just have to go out there and do our thing and worry about us." But the craftiness of Maddux, who is 9-11 with a 4.69 ERA and was to face Arizona here Thursday, can't be overlooked. "It's not every day you get to catch a Hall of Famer, a guy with 300-plus wins," Cubs catcher Michael Barrett said. "He's still got a lot of great innings ahead of him. I think it's a good move for him. He gets to go to a playoff-contending team and he's going to have an impact there." As for the unchanged Diamondbacks, who have only gotten younger with the recent call-ups of shortstop Stephen Drew, outfielder Carlos Quentin and relief pitcher Tony Pena, maybe no news will be good news, indeed. "In the beginning of the year, it felt like nobody in our division distinguished themselves enough to separate themselves and I think that's played out to this point," first baseman Tony Clark said. " . . . May the best team win." No news will be good news." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.230.14.121 ※ 編輯: Pulsars 來自: 61.230.14.121 (08/02 10:06)
