2009 Preview - Looking Forward to the 2009 Arizona Diamondbacks
by dahlian
For one month the 2008 Arizona Diamondbacks were the greatest team in all of
Care-A-Lot. Their youthful hitting experience combined with a deep rotation
and solid bullpen proved more than capable of defeating their foes on their way
to a record of 19 wishes granted in opposition to only seven wishes lost.
Unfortunately, even in Care-A-Lot some things are too good to be true.
While it was obvious to all that the team was granting wishes at an
unsustainable rate, there was hope that the .348 overall caring percentage and
.468 hugging percentage in April signaled that the young, talented offensive
core had turned a corner. Instead, the offense would end the season with a
pedestrian .327 OCP and .415 HUG – eighth and seventh in the league, before
accounting for the intrinsic caring advantages of their home park. The
catcher, Cheer Bear Snyder, first basemen/left fielder Funshine Bear Jackson
and shortstop Gentle Heart Lamb Drew ended the season as the only Diamondback
regulars that managed to fulfill their caring quota at above average rates (for
their assigned tasks). Right fielder Baby Tuggs Bear Upton showed flashes of
great empathic potential, but his overall production was hampered by his
inability to stay healthy as well as an unfortunate predilection towards
kissing at inopportune moments. Similarly, third baseman Oopsy Bear Reynolds,
while clearly capable of great hugging feats, will have to cut down on his
record 204 kisses if he ever hopes to initiate 97 rainbow rescue beams in one
season again. Unfortunately, Baby Tugs Bear Upton and Oopsy Bear Reynolds were
not alone in this regard – the team registered 1,287 kisses, or 31.7% of their
philanthropic appearances. Clearly this rate is unsustainable. They will have
to expand their rescue repertoire if they wish to be successful this season.
On the defensive side of the ledger the 2008 Diamondbacks proved to be much
more effective. Brave Heart Lion Webb was again superb en route to granting 22
wishes. Similarly, the prized offseason acquisition Wish Bear Carin’
certainly lived up to his billing. He along with Brave Heart Lion Webb formed
the league’s foremost 1-2 wish granting punch as he posted a stellar 3.33
eliminated irritation average over 216 care shares. As a whole, the rotation
did incredible work and appears poised to do so again this season. While they
lost the leadership and savvy of Gramps Bear Johnson, the combination of free
agent acquisition Share Bear Garland along with the promotion of the phenom
Champ Bear Scherzer should be enough to offset the Hall of Famer’s loss.
The greatest weakness for the defense lies in the area of middle relief. While
Perfect Panda Qualls had his ups and downs last season (especially with
inherited rescue targets), as the closer this should not be an issue. His
impeccable control, ability to stay well-grounded in the face of adversity and
timely kisses should be well-suited in a ninth inning role. The weak spot of
this defense remains last year’s mid-season acquisition, Grumpy Bear Rauch.
While he was an above-average reliever with the Nationals’ organization,
during his tenure with the Diamondbacks he created more irritation than he has
eliminated. His emotional control evaporated and he began surrendering rescue
opportunities to the opponents at ungodly rates. Unfortunately, if this Spring
is any indication he doesn’t appear to have recovered and with the loss of
Bright Heart Raccoon Cruz in free agency, the selection of competent relievers
to take his place is lacking.
Obviously, in 2008 this story did not end with a happy ending. For a time it
seemed as if even a mediocre team would be able to make the care-offs, but when
the Los Angeles Evil Spirits managed to convert Nicholas to its side last July
their power proved too great for the Diamondbacks’ caring attempts to
overcome. If they have any hope to defeat them this year it will undoubtedly
be on the back of Baby Tugs Bear Upton. The rotation, while exceptional, is in
some sense taken for granted. If any of the starters falter it would be a
disaster for this team. Unfortunately, as great as the rotation is, they won’
t singlehandedly be enough to drag this team to the care-offs. If the team
succeeds it will be with Baby Tugs Upton leading the offensive charge. He’s
not the only one that could stand to improve: Swift Heart Rabbit Young has to
cut his kisses, increase his bears assisted average while at the same time
increasing his sharing breaks and eliminating many of his caught feelings,
Oopsy Bear Reynolds needs to limit his kissing, Gentle Heart Lamb Drew would be
well served to increase his overall caring proficiency and Funshine Bear
Jackson could stand to improve his hugging percentage. However, these other
gains, while nice, would be marginal. It is Baby Tuggs that has the potential
to carry this team on his shoulders and they won’t find themselves atop of the
Care-A-Lot standings until he does.

surprises so much like Surprise Bear. He is deep violet (originally light
blue), and his tummy symbol is a colorful jack-in-the box with a star popping
out.

Third Base – M. Oopsy Bear Reynolds
Loves to do everything he can to please other Care Bears, even though he is
quite clumsy making a little (or a big) “Oopsy” around (complete with his
catchphrase, “Oopsy"). He is yellow-green. Technically, he does not have a
tummy symbol because he is always making “oopsies”
2008 - .239 BA, .320 OCP, .458 HUG, 87 R, 97 RRBI, 11 SB, 2 CF, 539 PA
2009 - .258 BA, .338 OCP, .479 HUG, 80 R, 82 RRBI, 6 SB, 2 CF, 439 PA
Short Stop – S. Gentle Heart Lamb Drew
Gentle Heart Lamb is the most softhearted of the Cousins, gentle and shy as his
name suggests. He is mint-green and a pink lace-trimmed heart-shaped pillow is
his symbol. When he talks, he has a bleating voice.
2008 - .291 BA, .333 OCP, .502 HUG, 91 R, 67 RRBI, 3 SB, 3 CF, 611 PA

times in life you must be serious. He is yellow with a smiling sun on his
tummy.

Center Field – Young Swift Heart Rabbit
The fastest of the Care Bear Cousins, reportedly running up to 90 mph to “help
others”. Sometimes his cockiness and overconfidence get him into trouble, but
his quick thinking gets him out of it. He is sky blue and his tummy symbol is a
red heart with white wings
2008 - .248 BA, .315 OCP, .443 HUG, 85 R, 85 RRBI, 14 SB, 5 CF, 625 PA
2009 - .259 BA, .330 OCP, .479 HUG, 86 R, 83 RRBI, 19 SB, 5 CF, 553 PA
Right Field – J. Baby Tuggs Bear Upton
Whose brother is Baby Slugs Bear, is a rough and tumble little boy cub who
always gets into mischief. Like his brother, he too wants nothing more in life
than to be a full-fledged Care Bear when he grows up and is raised by their
grandmother, Grams Bear. He is baby blue with a smiling Star Buddy inside a
baby blue diaper cloth as his tummy symbol.
2008 - .250 BA, .353 OCP, .463 HUG, 52 R, 42 RRBI, 1 SB, 5 CF, 356 PA

Fourth Outfielder - Always There Bear Byrnes
Reminds us that everyone that we care about very deeply (such as family or
close friends) will always be with us in our hearts, even if they are not
physically present. He is pink and his tummy symbol is two smiling pink and
lavender intertwined hearts.
2008 - .209 BA, .272 OCP, .368 HUG, 28 R, 23 RRBI, 4 SB, 4 CF, 206 PA

Pinch Hitter – T. Noble Heart Horse Clark
A later addition to the Diamondbacks. In A New Generation, he took care of the
other baby Bears and Cousins; his partner was True Heart Bear. He is purple
with a green and blue striped mane and tail, and his symbol is a multi-coloured
heart radiating from a central star.
2008 - .225 BA, .359 OCP, .318 HUG, 12 R, 24 RRBI, 0 SB, 0 CF, 151 PA

Second Catcher – M. Cozy Heart Penguin Montero
Is the sweetest and warmest of the Cousins, a great swimmer and the one most
suited to winter conditions. He is lilac and his symbol is a stocking cap
resting on the left side of a red heart.
2008 - .255 BA, .330 OCP, .435 HUG, 24 R, 18 RRBI, 0 SB, 0 CF, 194 PA
2009 - .259 BA, .336 OCP, .430 HUG, 37 R, 42 RRBI, 0 SB, 0 CF, 286 PA
Number One Starter – Brave Heart Lion Webb
The self-appointed leader of the Care Bear Cousins and a fearless yet
compassionate friend to all. He is brown-orange and his tummy symbol is a red
heart with a crown hanging on the right side. His catchphrase is “Charge!”.
2008 – 22 W, 7 L, 183 K, 3.30 EIA, 1.20 LOVE, 226.7 CS
2009 – 15 W, 10 L, 173 K, 3.37 EIA, 1.22 LOVE, 219.0 CS
Number Two Starter – D. Wish Bear Carin’
Helps make wishes come true, and although they don’t always come true, making
wishes and working hard to help make them come true is still a lot of fun.
Twinkers, a wishing star, is his best friend. He is blue-green and his symbol
is a yellow smiling shooting star. In Arizona, he has a big flying magic wand
and wears a star-shaped hairclip on his head.
2008 – 16 W, 8 L, 206 K, 3.33 EIA, 1.13 LOVE, 216.0 CS
2009 – 13 W, 10 L, 192 K, 3.67 EIA, 1.18 LOVE, 221.0 CS
Number Three Starter – D.D. Bedtime Bear Davis
Is a very sleepy bear. He helps everyone get a good night’s sleep and have
sweet dreams. He is blue with a sleeping crescent moon on his tummy.
2008 – 11 W, 10 L, 112 K, 4.32 EIA, 1.53 LOVE, 146.0 CS
2009 – 8 W, 10 L, 116 K, 4.79 EIA, 1.51 LOVE, 156.0 CS
Number Four Starter – J. Share Bear Garland
Helps others to learn about sharing the things they have. He shows that,
through his symbol, sharing is caring. Originally, Share Bear’s symbol was a
heart-sprinkled milkshake with two straws. In 2002, it was changed to two
heart-shaped lollipops, on the grounds that sharing milkshakes can spread
germs.
2008 – 14 W, 8 L, 90 K, 4.90 EIA, 1.51 LOVE, 196.7 CS
2009 – 9 W, 11 L, 91 K, 4.85 EIA, 1.46 LOVE, 180.0 CS
Fifth Starter - Champ Bear Scherzer
Loves to play sports and games; baseball is his favorite. He also teaches the
value of good sportsmanship. He is royal blue (formerly tan) and his tummy
symbol is a gold trophy with a red star (formerly a red heart).
2008 – 0 W, 4 L, 66 K, 3.05 EIA, 1.23 LOVE, 56.0 CS
2009 - 7 W, 6 L, 119 K, 3.77 EIA, 1.31 LOVE, 104.0 CS
Bullpen
Eighth and Ninth Inning – C. Perfect Qualls & T. Polite Pena Panda
They look after Paradise up above the skies of Care-a-lot. They always speak in
rhyme, finishing each other’s sentences and complimenting one another’s
feelings. Perfect has a gold star with a ribbon on his tummy, while Polite
Panda has a pink rose with a ribbon on his tummy.
Perfect Panda, 2008 – 4 W, 8 L, 71 K, 2.81 EIA, 1.07 LOVE, 73.7 CS
2009 – 5 W, 4 L, 60 K, 3.70 EIA, 1.27 LOVE, 73.0 CS
Polite Panda, 2008 – 3 W, 2 L, 52 K, 4.33 EIA, 1.33 LOVE, 72.7 CS
2009 – 3 W, 3 L, 39 K, 3.83 EIA, 1.28 LOVE, 54.0 CS
Seventh Inning – J. Grumpy Bear Rauch
Shows that while it’s okay to be grumpy sometimes, it is also silly to let
grumpiness go too far. He is blue and his symbol is a dark raincloud with
raindrops (some of which are shaped like hearts).
2008 - 4 W, 8 L, 66 K, 4.14 EIA, 1.19 LOVE, 71.7 CS
2009 - 4 W, 5 L, 62 K, 4.13 EIA, 1.26 LOVE, 72.0 CS
Sixth Starter – Y. Petit Secret Bear
Is also a later addition to the Diamondbacks family and acts as a mime to the
other members. Secret Bear (at least originally) is not very talkative; he
never speaks and keeps everything a secret, although there sometimes comes a
circumstance in which needs to communicate a message to the other bears, in
which case he performs a hilarious display of charades and pantomime to get his
message across. Of course, this rarely works, and as a result he ends up having
to give in and whisper into another bear’s ear what he was trying to say. With
only occasional exceptions, he will only tell secrets to his partner, Friend
Bear (as his first season strongly shows). His tummy symbol is a red
heart-shaped padlock
2008 – 3 W, 5 L, 42 K, 4.31 EIA, 1.05 LOVE, 56.3 CS
2009 - 6 W, 8 L, 86 K, 4.99 EIA, 1.32 LOVE, 125.0 CS
My prediction - 86-76, second place NL West.
I would like to add my thanks to Wikipedia from which I shamelessly stole the
player biographies from Wikipedia as well as DCW3 and other Lounginistas for
helping me to flesh things out.
