[球探報告] Chris Owings
Round Overall Player Position
1s 41 Chris Owings SS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BA:
Owings streaked to the front of the class of prep hitters in South Carolina
and into second-round consideration for several teams, who saw him as an
offensive middle infielder capable of staying at shortstop. He joined North
Carolina's top prep hitter, Wil Myers, as part of a boffo South Carolina
recruiting class, but both were in danger of signing as two of the more
accomplished prep position players with present offensive skills and
middle-of-the-diamond defensive ability. Owings reminds some scouts of former
Georgia All-American Gordon Beckham, though with less power. Owings has
offensive tools and put them together at the right time for crosscheckers and
scouting directors. He has quick, strong hands and average speed, and makes
an impact in several ways as a hitter. He added strength over the last year
and hits with more authority, prompting his move up draft boards. He's an
average defender at short, though he lacks natural, true shortstop actions.
Some scouts believe Owings' value is less than the sum of his parts, as they
question his feel for hitting and peg him to move to second base as a pro,
rather than remain at shortstop. While he might be a better value in the
fifth round, he's not expected to last that long.

SCOUTING PROFILE (3/1): Owings isn't an especially physical player, nor does
he have blazing speed in the middle of the field as he has been clocked in
the 60 in a pedestrian 6.9 seconds. But he is one of the best pure shortstops
in the 2009 draft class, and has a surprisingly strong bat for his size.
Owings is one of those shortstops whose abilitiy stands out on routine plays.
He is extremely dependable and sure-handed, and has a very strong and
accurate arm. Should he elect to go the college route out of high school, he
should be able to step in immediately at South Carolina and handle shortstop
defensively at the Southeastern-Conference level. Offensively, Owing's key is
his how he uses his hands. Of most importance, he needs to keep his hands
very short and quick to the ball. He doesn't project home-run power but
should collect more than his share of doubles as he has little trouble
pulling balls down the third base-line. He profiles as an ideal No. 2 type
hitter as he can handle the bat and excels in doing whatever is necessary to
keep an inning going. Owings' baseball resume points to what type of player
he is. He hit .488-4-30 as a high-school junior, was named the South Carolina
2-A player of the year and was selected to the all-state team for the third
consecutive season. Gilbert High won its second state title in the last three
years in 2008, and Owings' South Carolina Diamond Devils summer club, with
Owings batting leadoff and playing shortstop, won both the World Wood Bat
Association (WWBA) 17-and-under summer championship and the Continental
Amateur Baseball Association (CABA) 18-and-under World Series.-DAVID RAWNSLEY
UPDATE (5/15): Owings hit .482-5-19 with 20 stolen bases for Gilbert High
this spring, and was a repeat selection as South Carolina's 2-A player of the
year. While he doesn't do any one thing extremely well, Owings clearly
indicated to a wave of scouts who saw him play as a prep senior that he is
very solid across the board. If anything, he may have convinced them he can
be an offensive middle infielder capable of remaining at shortstop. His raw
power potential did not stick out, but he impressed scouts with his quick,
direct stroke through the hitting zone and ability to square up balls
consistently. He was steady in the field with a quick release, and sound,
repeatable arm action. He's also a slightly above-average runner and is
normally timed around 4.15 seconds to first base. Most scouts believe Owings
settled in as a solid second-round pick, though South Carolina fights hard to
keep its recruits and that may yet be a factor in where he is drafted.-JEFF

MLB.com:
Hitting ability: Owings has a good swing and should have the chance to hit
for average at the next level. He's short to the ball and uses
the whole field well.
Power: He can apply force to his swing, but he doesn't have a ton of strength,
so he's got well below-average power, especially with wood.
Running speed: Has above-average speed.
Base running: Steals some bases now, but it probably won't be part of his
game in the future.
Arm strength: His arm plays OK now because he plays a shallow shortstop, but
on a bigger field, he may not have enough arm to stay at the
position.
Fielding: Not a natural defender at short, he might be better suited to play
second base.
Range: His feet are just OK and he has some trouble with balls in the hole.
Physical Description: Owings has a small frame with some wiry strength, kind
of like a Kurt Stillwell type.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Good makeup, knows how to play the game. Some good hitting skills
and he can run pretty well.
Weaknesses: Below-average power and a lack of fluid actions at short that might
necessitate a move to second base.
Summary: Owings plays shortstop for his high school team, but that might not be
his best defensive home as a pro, with a move to second perhaps on tap
because of his arm strength and range. On the other side of second,
his hands will play fine and he could be an offensive-minded second
baseman who hits for average at the next level. He doesn't have much
power, but he does use the whole field well. He doesn't have a plus
tool, but he's the type of player who, if you're patient with him,
will be better than the sum of his parts.
