Round Overall Player Position 5 156 Ryan Wheeler 1B ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BA: Wheeler was a high school basketball teammate of North Carolina forward Deon Thompson. During his prep baseball career, Wheeler did little to impress scouts, but in the summer after his graduation in 2006 he began working with a local part-time scout who doubles as a travel ball coach. The sudden change in his hitting ability was striking. Wheeler blasted several long shots out of old Torrance Park in a home run derby during a summer showcase, and he has been hitting ever since. Now 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, he batted .285 with five home runs in the Cape Cod League last summer and was batting .324/.429/.576 with nine home runs this spring. Wheeler has dabbled as a third baseman, but his long-term home should be at first, where he projects as an average defender. Scouts are most intrigued by his hitting ability, as he displays promising power as well as patience and an intelligent approach. Wheeler also gets high marks for his plate coverage, as well as his knack for driving the ball to the opposite field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- pgcrosschecker: SCOUTING PROFILE (3/1): The Wheelers, Tim at Orleans and Ryan at Brewster (no relation), were both unheralded position players from California prior to playing in the Cape Cod League last summer, with similar skill sets. The big difference between the two is Tim runs much better than Ryan, whose best tool is his raw power. At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, he has good size and overall strength, and can launch balls. He showed power to all fields as a sophomore at Loyola Marymount, drilling a team-high 20 doubles and six home runs, while batting .345 with 45 RBIs. His power on the Cape was more to the pull side, as all five homers he slammed for Brewster were to right field. Overall, he hit .285 and had 18 RBIs. Wheeler is essentially a one-dimensional hitter with an unusually long swing, and aims for the fences almost every time up. In the process, he is often fooled by off-speed pitches, and struck out 40 times on the summer in 158 at-bats. He’s especially vulnerable when he drops his hands on his load, looking for more power. But when he does connect, he can hit balls a long way. The remainder of Wheeler’s tools are just fair. He ’s a serviceable defensive first baseman with decent hands and arm strength, and is pretty much limited to first base—though he can play third in a pinch. Unlike Tim Wheeler, who led the Cape Cod League in stolen bases, Ryan is a below-average runner.—ALLAN SIMPSON UPDATE (5/15): Wheeler played a pivotal role this spring for Loyola Marymount as it qualified for the West Coast Conference championship series. With a quick, compact stroke, a patient, disciplined approach to hitting and a big, strong well-proportioned frame, Wheeler projects plus power but it has been slower to evolve than expected. He homered nine times this spring while hitting .323 with 48 RBIs, but was often upstaged as a power hitter by his much smaller teammate Angelo Songco, who blasted 15 long balls. It may be only a matter of time before his true power surfaces as Wheeler generates excellent bat speed and already has a lofted swing. He is an adequate defender at first, and though his raw speed is well below-average, he is considered a smart, head’s-up base runner.—AS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- baseballbeginnings: PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tall, square shouldered, full chest, long legs. Good athlete for big man. Strong, large hands and forearms. Mature features. STRENGTHS: Inside-out swing with power to LCF, CF and RF. Improving, “handsy, ” with plate discipline and advanced attack plan for amateur hitter. Natural gap hitter to LCF, makes contact, covers strike zone, balanced, keeps head down, bat stays in hitting zone for a long time, two-handed uppercut finish, coming fast. Good footwork around the bag; will make plays defensively. Probably a better defender than he gets credit for. WEAKNESSES: Sometimes slips out of CF approach, has shown aptitude for self-correction. Could be considered too selective of a hitter for some. Below-average runner. Will need to watch body. SUMMARY: Fast hands and growing strength, just needs experience and at-bats. LHH 1B who can drive ball for avg. and power; can play 1B or LF. Good work ethic and aptitude. Should become everyday corner player for a contender. Good Luck ‘09 and beyond. GRADES: Hit 40/60 Power 40/60 Run 40/45 Arm 50/50 Field 45/55 Overall Future Potential: 55 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- camdendepot: Scouted: March 22, 2009 vs. Fresno State (in attendance) Frame: Wheeler is a big body with an athletic build and some room to thicken. At 6'4" he is a prototypical first baseman with plenty of reach, providing an optimal target from around the infield. He moves well enough side-to-side, and is a good enough athlete, that he shouldn't lose too much in the way of defense by adding some strength at the pro level. Swing: Load – Wheeler rocks back slightly in his load, utilizing a toe tap as the start to his timing mechanism. His hands are in position to utilize a short path to the ball and remain quiet during the load. He takes minimal action to set himself up and charges to a 60/40 weight distro. Stride – Wheeler's stride is short and controlled, starting his momentum towards the ball. His hands stay tied to his body (moving forward with his slight stride), keeping a short path to the ball. They also remain in an elevated position slightly above the shoulder, giving him full range to the quadrants with his bat head. Swing – Wheeler comes through quick and efficient to the ball. His compact swing is under control, as he keeps a steady head and smooth weight transfer. His hips correctly trigger his attack, and he flows well from hips to elbow to knob to barrel. Though he generates good torque, he can come through on a flat plane more conducive to linedrives than homeruns. Contact – At contact, Wheeler is well-balanced with a straight line running from his helmet down his torso, thigh and out of his knee. He does a good job of utilizing his torso to generate power, while his short path and controlled stride help to prevent any loss of momentum to the ball. Follow-through – Wheeler follows-through up and easy with a two-handed release. He maintains his balance and weight distribution after rotating through and is clean out-of-the-box. Swing Summary – Wheeler has a pretty lefty swing, showcasing good control, solid hip rotation and quiet head and hands. His drafting organization will need to determine whether it is worth while trying to add some uppercut to his plane to try and turn more doubles into homeruns at the professional level. Right now, his power is mostly to the pull side, though his solid approach and impressive mechanics should allow him to learn to drive the ball the other way more effectively as he matures as a hitter. Fielding: Wheeler's footspeed likely prevents him from profiling to an OF corner, but his hands and lateral movements make him an above-average defender for first base. He boasts soft hands and plus footwork around the bag, helping him to scoop and field with equal ease. While defensive value is limited at first base, his drafting team should be confident that he'll provide plus value for the position. Grading Out (as of date written): Hitting Power Speed Defense Arm 55/60 55 40/45 55 55 Nick’s Notes: Wheeler is one of the premier corner bats in a draft short on refined hitters. He already has an advanced approach at the plate and solid understanding of the strikezone. As discussed above, he should become more adept at driving the ball the other way as he matures. While his bat will have to carry him, given his likely being limited to first base, his drafting organization will at least have the piece of mind that he'll provide good defensive value for the position. He hasn't developed the homerun power to push him towards the top of the draft board, but he could be very good value just outside of the first round, particularly if some minor tweaks succeed in turning some of those doubles into homers. He's a nice blend of refinement and projection and should make some organization very happy over the next few years.
