Weight: 190

Kevin Mulvey was acquired by the Minnesota Twins in the Johan Santana trade,
and actually was the best performer of the other two pitching prospects
(Deolis Guerra and Philip Humber) the Twins received. The young right-hander,
the New York Mets second round selection in the 2006 draft, will help anchor
the Rochester Red Wings rotation in 2009, but will likely see time with the
big league club. After starting 27 games for the Red Wings in 2008, Mulvey
should be a top pitcher in the International League this season.
Mulvey began his professional career as a member of the Gulf Coast League
Mets, but made only one start before being promoted to the Binghamton Mets,
the New York Mets Double-A Eastern League affiliate. He made three starts for
Binghamton, posting a 1.35 earned run average, and would go on to start the
2007 season with the B-Mets.
In 2007, Mulvey was one of the more dominant starters in the Eastern League,
allowing him to shoot up the ranks of Mets pitching prospects. Making 26
starts, Mulvey won 11 games, and had a very good 3.32 earned run average. He
would get a start at Triple-A New Orleans to end the 2007 season, tossing six
innings of shutout ball, earning the victory.
For his efforts, Mulvey was named a mid-season Eastern League All-Star, and
was selected to participate in the Futures Game.
That would be the last start the right-hander would make as a member of the
New York Mets organization, as he would toe the rubber in 2008 as a member of
the Rochester Red Wings. One of the more consistent starters for the Wings,
Mulvey was great at the beginning and end of the season, though he struggled
during the mid-season months. Still, the Twins loved his 3.77 earned run
average, and he almost won a roster spot this past Spring Training.
Mulvey will open the 2009 season with the Rochester Red Wings, but the Twins
will need him to make some starts this season, or possibly come out of the
bullpen with some long relief.
Repertoire. Fastball, Slider, Curveball, Changeup.
Fastball. Mulvey has a very good fastball, which he can crank up to 94 on
some occasions. However, his heater usually sits in the high-80s to low-90s
range, and he has the ability to throw it for strikes. He overthrew a bit
last season, causing him to lose some command, but he usually is very
consistent with his fastball. He also throws a good low-90s two-seamer, which
he barrels down in the strike zone.
Other Pitches. Mulvey has a plus slider, which he uses in any count. It is
definitely his outpitch, and it compliments his fastball very well. Mulvey
also has a very good curveball, which he can throw for strikes. A fifth
pitch, Mulvey’s changeup is also a consistent pitch, which he has very good
command of. He has one of the better arsenals in the organization.
Projection. Mulvey definitely has the pitches to be a Major League pitcher,
and he has been a consistent starter since his days at Villanova University.
However, the Twins do not need another right-handed starter right now, and he
may be better served to get some bullpen work. He barely missed out on a
roster spot with the team in 2009, and he will once again show how good he is
at Rochester. A move to the bullpen may hurry him to the Major Leagues, but
he is definitely a starter.
ETA. 2009. Mulvey will be with the Twins in some capacity during the 2009
season, and it is only a matter of when. He will start the season in
Triple-A, but will likely be with the team by June at the latest. The Twins
pitching staff has already been hit with a rash of injuries, as Boof Bonser
and Scott Baker will start the 2009 season on the disabled list. Look for him
to get a shot if one of the starters go down early in the season.
