Clark named to executive spot with MLBPA

Former big league first baseman Tony Clark has been tabbed by the Major
League Baseball Players Association as the director of player relations, the
union's exeutive director Michael Weiner announced Wednesday.
"It is an honor to welcome Tony to the Association's staff," said Weiner in a
written statement. "Tony is as passionate about this union as any player I've
known and is highly respected throughout the game. He will be a tremendous
asset to the players' cause."
In his role, Clark is expected to play a large part in future collective
bargaining discussions. The 15-year veteran of the Major Leagues will also
manage the union's efforts in membership communications and education.
"I am excited to begin this next chapter of my life by doing my best to
ensure that the MLBPA remains a strong and cohesive union," Clark said in the
statement. "I am looking forward to developing relationships with all union
members, past and present, learning about the issues important to them, and
keeping them informed and up to date on all issues related to the Basic
Agreement."
Clark has been an active participant in the MLBPA since 1999. The 37-year-old
has served as a team player representative and, for the last seven years, as
an association representative, the highest position a player can hold in the
union. Clark is also familiar with the issues surrounding collective
bargaining agreements, playing a role in negotiations in 2002 and 2006.
Clark retired in 2009 after spending time over his long career with the
Tigers, D-backs, Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, and Padres. He retired with a career
batting average of .262, with 1,188 hits, 251 home runs and 824 RBIs.
