Arizona player poll: Diamondbacks evaluate themselves
http://tinyurl.com/y64f2fc
If anyone knows the Diamondbacks, it should be the Diamondbacks, right?
That was the premise in taking a poll of 24 players to get their thoughts on
who would stand out among their peers this season.
Some of the answers were predictable, some a little surprising and some make
you wonder if the Diamondbacks really do know themselves.
Team MVP
Justin Upton, 17; Stephen Drew, 2; Dan Haren, 2; Conor Jackson, 1; Adam
LaRoche, 1; Mark Reynolds, 1.
Coming off a season in which he established himself as one of the game's
better outfielders, Upton may just be scratching the surface. His teammates
are on board with the rest of the baseball industry in thinking that way, too.
Best starter
Haren, 21; Brandon Webb, 2; Edwin Jackson, 1.
Haren seems like a no-brainer. He is coming off his best season and is in the
prime of his career.
Best reliever
Chad Qualls, 11; Juan Gutierrez, 10; Jordan Norberto, 1; Esmerling Vasquez,
1; Clay Zavada, 1.
Gutierrez was terrific in spring training, not allowing a run in the Cactus
League, but the veteran Qualls, who looks healthy following knee surgery,
edged him out.
Best bench player
Augie Ojeda, 8; Gerardo Parra, 5; Tony Abreu, 5; Ryan Roberts, 2; Rusty Ryal,
2; Chris Snyder, 2.
Ojeda knows his role and has handled it well for the past three seasons,
providing tough at-bats off the bench and standout defense. That Abreu, a
newcomer, got five votes shows how impressive his spring was to his new
teammates.
Breakout season
Kelly Johnson, 4; Gutierrez, 3; C. Jackson, 3; Ian Kennedy, 3; Chris Young,
3; Miguel Montero, 2; Drew, 2; Abreu, 1; Norberto, 1; Ryal, 1; Upton, 1.
Considering many of the Diamondbacks, including all the everyday players,
already have had breakout seasons, this category was a bit subjective, but
teammates think Johnson still can take his game to another level.
Bounce-back season
C. Jackson, 10; Young, 7; Webb, 3; Johnson, 2; Snyder, 2.
Those five all are coming off down years, but Jackson got the nod, likely
because he looked the best at the plate during the spring.
Team leader
Montero, 6; LaRoche, 5; Haren, 5; Snyder, 4; Reynolds, 1; Drew, 1.
The upbeat and energetic Montero edged out LaRoche and Haren, who was the
only pitcher to receive votes. Two new players abstained, saying they didn't
yet know enough about their teammates.
NL West champs
Diamondbacks, 24.
Hey, you can't say they don't believe in themselves.
