The Diamondbacks are expected to add a small group of players when major league rosters expand Thursday. It will not be all hands on deck. Infielder/outfielder Geoff Blum and left-hander Alberto Castillo, both on the disabled list, have played well in recent rehab games and are expected to rejoin the team when it begins a three-game series in San Francisco on Friday. Other than that, a third catcher and few other arms could be in first wave of newcomers, manager Kirk Gibson said. Complicating things slightly is the fact that the D-backs' top two minor league affiliates, Class AAA Reno and Class AA Mobile, have made the postseason. At the same time, the D-backs will do what is best for the major league team, of course. "You have to be sensitive to that, yet we don't want to be the team that is short if we go into a 20-inning game. You're talking about the bullpen," Gibson said. "I was never one to have too many. I think it can kind of mess with the chemistry of the club," said D-backs general manager Kevin Towers, whose teams often were in contention while he was in San Diego. "It's not going to be 40. It's probably not going to be 35. It's going to be less than that. You usually add an extra catcher, usually a couple of extra arms. Maybe a defender, a bat." The D-backs have a stable of quality arms at Mobile, including right-handers Trevor Baur and Jarrod Parker and left-hander Tyler Skaggs, but Towers would not say if any of them will move moved to the majors. Bauer, the third player taken in the 2011 draft, is on the 40-man roster after signing a major league contract July 25. Parker and Skaggs are not, although Parker must be protected this winter after being a first-round draft choice in 2007. "I don't want to get into names. There are a lot of guys at Double-A and Triple-A that we will probably discuss," Towers said. The D-backs have 39 players on their roster. It seems like Trevor Bauer may do that for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season. After dominating at UCLA, Bauer has already progressed to Double-A. After three good outings, Bauer ran into a bump into the road, giving up 10 runs in 1.2 innings.
