Scott Hairston - 2B Diamondbacks - Age 23
.360/.412/.539, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 19/7 K/BB, 3 SB in 89 AB
Back problems limited Hairston to an 814 OPS and 337 AB at
Double-A El Paso, but in the AFL, the 2001 third-round pick
resumed hitting like he during his first two pro seasons.
Though the chances of him remaining at second base for
the long term appear to be diminishing, he has the bat to
carry left field. If it turns out that Luis Gonzalez
won’t be able to play through his partially torn elbow
ligament, Hairston might become an option next season.
It’s more likely that he’ll have to wait until 2005 for
his opportunity. He projects as a Marcus Giles-type hitter.
Josh Kroeger - OF Diamondbacks - Age 22
.253/.349/.360, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 23/10 K/BB, 2 SB in 75 AB
Kroeger finally seemed to be fulfilling his potential when
he hit .341 with 41 extra-base hits and 35 walks in 305 AB
for Single-A Lancaster last season, but he struggled to
amass a 700 OPS in 54 games in Double-A and in the AFL.
The tools have always been there for the 2004 fourth-round
pick, but in order for him to be viewed as a potential
starter in right field, he’ll need to have a big season
in Double-A next year.
Dustin Nippert - RHP Diamondbacks - Age 22
1-2, 3.60 ERA, 26 H, 30/12 K/BB in 30 IP (8 starts)
With his mid-90s fastball and impressive curve, Nippert
has quickly emerged as one of Arizona’s top pitching prospects.
The 2002 15th-round pick limited hitters to a .191 average
and had a 96/32 K/BB ratio in 95 2/3 IP for Single-A
South Bend last season. Whether or not he can stay healthy is a
big question mark, but if he avoids arm troubles, he could make
it to Arizona as soon as 2005.
Sergio Santos - SS Diamondbacks - Age 20
.250, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 22/9 K/BB, 0 SB in 96 AB
Santos probably shouldn’t have been moved up to Double-A in July,
but his progress in his first full pro season was rather encouraging.
The 27th overall pick in the 2002 draft hit .278 with 10 HR, 65 RBI,
89/49 K/BB and 5 SB in 478 AB between Single-A Lancaster and El Paso.
He’ll need full seasons at Double- and Triple-A before he’s ready
to claim a spot in the Arizona infield. He may end up at third base,
depending on what happens with Alex Cintron, Shea Hillenbrand
and Chad Tracy over the next couple of years.
