Joel Guzman - SS/3B Dodgers - Age 20 - ETA: June 2006 Previous rankings: mid-2002 #92, 2003 #112, mid-2003 #80, 2004 #126, mid-2004 #60, 2005 #4 .282/.346/.488, 13 HR, 59 RBI, 102/34 K/BB, 3 SB in 326 AB for Double-A Jacksonville It comes as a bit of a disappointment that Guzman isn’t playing any better this year than he did after arriving in Double-A last season (.280/.325/.522 in 46 games). However, he’s still putting up impressive numbers for a 20-year-old infielder. Now back at his original position of shortstop after spending much of the first couple of months at third base, he seems less likely to help the Dodgers at the start of next year. Andy LaRoche hasn’t overtaken him as a prospect, but he could be the more ready of the two. Guzman, who still might end up in right field rather than somewhere in the infield, possesses superstar upside. He could become a Juan Gonzalez-type hitter. 17. Andy LaRoche - 3B Dodgers - Age 21 - ETA: June 2006 Previous rankings: none .333/.380/.651, 21 HR, 51 RBI, 38/19 K/BB, 6 SB in 249 AB for Single-A Vero Beach .287/.362/.511, 5 HR, 16 RBI, 25/11 K/BB, 0 SB in 94 AB for Double-A Jacksonville LaRoche’s emergence has complicated the Dodgers’ plans to stick Joel Guzman at third base. Although LaRoche started the year a level behind Guzman, he’s actually the older of the two and it now looks like he might be the first to reach the majors. The 2003 39th-round pick shows 35-40 homer power and he projects as a quality defensive third baseman. He may not get on base enough to be a star, but he’ll be more than the next Tony Batista. 19. Chad Billingsley - RHP Dodgers - Age 20 - ETA: July 2006 Previous rankings: mid-2004 #81, 2005 #18 7-4, 4.28 ERA, 84 H, 105/32 K/BB in 90 1/3 IP for Double-A Jacksonville Billingsley is finding Double-A a challenge, but he is steadily improving and his ratios have remained strong all season. The 2003 first-round pick throws 93-95 and both his curveball and slider can be plus pitches. It’s an arsenal that will allow him to overpower a healthy percentage of major league hitters when he’s on. He may have Edwin Jackson and Greg Miller to contend with when the Dodgers need a pitcher in mid-2006, but right now, he’s ahead of both. 50. Edwin Jackson - RHP Dodgers - Age 21 - ETA: June 2006 Previous rankings: mid-2003 #81, 2004 #15, mid-2004 (in majors), 2005 #22 3-2, 3.19 ERA, 26 H, 21/8 K/BB in 31 IP for Double-A Jacksonville 3-7, 8.62 ERA, 76 H, 33/37 K/BB in 55 1/3 IP for Triple-A Las Vegas 51. Russell Martin - C Dodgers - Age 22 - ETA: 2007 Previous rankings: none .313/.434/.414, 5 HR, 43 RBI, 43/53 K/BB, 8 SB in 278 AB for Double-A Jacksonville 53. Chuck Tiffany - LHP Dodgers - Age 20 - ETA: 2008 Previous rankings: 2005 #56 8-5, 3.36 ERA, 64 H, 92/28 K/BB in 80 1/3 IP for Single-A Vero Beach 57. Greg Miller - LHP Dodgers - Age 20 - ETA: 2007 Previous rankings: 2004 #18, mid-2004 #21, 2005 #40 0-0, 2.25 ERA, 7 H, 14/4 K/BB in 12 IP for Rookie GCL Dodgers 79. James Loney - 1B Dodgers - Age 21 - ETA: 2007 Previous rankings: 2003 #68, mid-2003 #31, 2004 #36, mid-2004 #33, 2005 #42 .277/.357/.393, 7 HR, 36 RBI, 67/42 K/BB, 0 SB in 336 AB for Double-A Jacksonville 89. Jonathan Broxton - RHP Dodgers - Age 21 - ETA: Sept. 2005 Previous rankings: 2005 #127 4-3, 3.44 ERA, 76 H, 95/28 K/BB in 89 IP for Double-A Jacksonville 99.
