Advocaat quits Belgium, admits Russia talks
Published 16 April, 2010, 12:06
Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, who terminated his contract with Belgium’s
football team on Thursday, has admitted he is in negotiations with Russia.
Taking to Sovetsky Sport newspaper, the 62-year-old said that quitting
Belgium was “an emotional and quite an unpleasant decision” for him.
“But it was impossible to postpone it any more. I have to confess, lately I
have had contacts with representatives of the RFU [Russia’s Football Union],
who have expressed serious interest in my services. And I decided – if I
leave the national team of Belgium, that I should do it now. The federation
should be given time to find a worthy candidate for the position of the head
coach Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. Now the Belgians will have five months
to do so,” Dick Advocaat said.
The Belgian Football Federation said in a statement that they are taken aback
by the decision.
The newspaper reports in Belgium claim the main reason for Advocaat's
withdrawal was financial (Dutch Het Nieuwsblad claim that Russia is ready to
pay the enormous sum of €12 million per year for Advocaat, whose annual
salary with Belgium was €600,000), but the coach himself says there are
other motives for the move.
“It is a unique opportunity to work in such a strong and interesting team as
Russia. A definite plus is the fact that I know the country as well as the
footballers who play in the national team. I am also acquainted with the RFU
president, Sergey Fursenko, with whom at one time we gained a great
understanding,” he said.
Advocaat is one of the most successful foreign coaches to have worked in
Russia. During his rule in Zenit Saint Petersburg, the club claimed the home
league title, the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
“Negotiations with the RFU are still continuing and the final decision is
not yet made. But we are moving the right way,” the coach stressed.
RFU President Sergey Fursenko said that the deadline for the new coach to be
named in the RFU Conference is scheduled for May 17.
However, Advocaat’s former charge, Belgian international and Zenit Saint
Petersburg player Nicolas Lombaerts, believes the announcement may come as
soon as the weekend.
“I am one of those who do not want Advocaat to become coach of Team Russia.
I really like working with him in the national team of Belgium. While I will
not hide this fact from you: I know that Dick could sign a contract with the
RFU over the weekend, when [Zenit] will be at the game in Tomsk. In general,
I don’t want him to return to Russia,” Lombaerts told Sport-Express
newspaper.
In addition, there are some in Russia who are also unhappy with the choice of
Advocaat as the coach of the country’s national team.
“Advocaat has his own ideas about ethics. Just remember how easily he broke
his contract – first he gave away the Football Federation of Australia for
Zenit, and now did the same with Belgium. It is all about the money for him.
I think that the invitation to a man with such a reputation casts a shadow on
the RFU and on Russian football as a whole,” Vyacheslav Koloskov, former RFU
boss and FIFA vice-president, told Bobsoccer.ru.
Russia’s current coach, Advocaat’s countryman Guus Hiddink, officially
steps down this summer after the World Cup. He was already in been introduced
as the new boss of Turkey.
