[歐錦]Baljic returns to Bosnia squad
SARAJEVO, Oct 2 (Reuters)
Galatasaray forward Elvir Baljic recovered fully from a cruciate ligament
injury and was named on Thursday in the Bosnia squad for the next week's
do-or-die Euro 2004 Group Two qualifier against Denmark.
He was one of 13 foreign-based players coach Blaz Sliskovic called up for
the October 11 match at Sarajevo's Olympic Stadium Kosevo that might see
Bosnia qualifying for a major tournament for the first time in its short
history.
Romania, who played all their matches, and Denmark top the group on 14
points, followed by Bosnia on 12 and Norway on 11 while Luxembourg are
pointless. Denmark need a draw to win the group but their defeat will
send Bosnia packing for Portugal.
There were no new names as Sliskovic stuck to the experienced squad that
recovered from the two opening defeats to win four of their last five
qualifiers. Seven more players will be called up after next weekend's
league matches.
'Everybody is healthy and I hope it stays this way. I watched Baljic
play for his club over the weekend and he seems fully fit and capable
of responding to all demands of such a match,' the coach added.
Former Real Madrid forward Baljic, arguably the best Bosnian player
after the country broke away from the old Yugoslavia in the 1990s,
will bring more firepower up front where he is likely to partner
another Turkey-based player Elvir Bolic.
Sliskovic said he still did not have a clear idea what tactics to use
against seasoned Denmark. Bosnia beat Denmark twice in their three
encounters, in a 1997 World Cup qualifier in Sarajevo and in Copenhagen
earlier this year.
'They are ahead of us in many aspects of the game and compared to
Copenhagen it will be a very different situation because now we have
to win,' he said.
'Back then, we were pointless and not under pressure. Now we want to
win so badly and we have to play with our heads and not with our hearts
if we want to achieve a good result.
'This team has grown and matured but it can still find itself in trouble
if it concedes a goal and I have to work hard with players on this. It
does not mean we will only defend but we have to be very cautious,'
Sliskovic said.
