[友誼賽]Romania in need of morale boost
BUCHAREST, Oct 6 (Reuters)
Romania will be without several overseas-based players for Saturday's
friendly against Japan.
Defender Cosmin Contra, midfielders Alin Stoica and Florin Cernat and
forward Marius Niculae have not recovered from injury in time for the
game, coach Anghel Iordanescu told reporters on Monday.
Iordanescu is using the match in Bucharest as preparation for Romania's
next World Cup qualifying campaign, with their Euro 2004 qualifying hopes
likely to be ended on Saturday.
Romania have already finished their Group Two campaign. Although they
lie second in the group on 14 points, the same as leaders Denmark, they
will be eliminated from playoff contention if Norway (11) beat visiting
Luxembourg as expected on Saturday.
"Romania want a good start for the 2006 World Cup campaign and the friendly
against Japan seems to be the perfect opportunity for it," Iordanescu said.
Iordanescu added that he had allowed Salamanca goalkeeper Bogdan Stelea
to miss the game after a request from the player.
A Romanian Soccer Federation spokesman said Dinamo Kiev defender Tiberiu
Ghioane, who was set to replace Contra, had rejected Iordanescu's call.
Iordanescu did not elaborate on the matter.
Iordanescu named 10 Romanian-based players in his squad, including uncapped
midfielders Ianis Zicu of Dinamo Bucharest and Andrei Cristea of FCM Bacau
and Arges Pitesti striker Nicolae Dica.
Dica has scored eight goals in eight matches in the Romanian league this
