[歐錦]Russia put faith in experience
MOSCOW, Nov 5 (Reuters)
Russia coach Georgy Yartsev went with experience when he named
his 23-man squad on Wednesday for the two-legged Euro 2004 playoff
against Wales.
Yartsev, who led Russia to two wins and a draw in their last three
qualifiers after taking over from Valery Gazzayev, has put his faith
in veteran players, such as defender Viktor Onopko and midfielder
Alexander Mostovoi.
Yartsev also recalled Porto winger Dmitry Alenichev and Zenit St
Petersburg playmaker Vladislav Radimov, who both missed Russia's
final qualifier, a 3-1 win over Georgia on October 11, with injuries.
Experienced midfielder Alexei Smertin was also included in the squad
despite undergoing knee surgery two weeks ago.
Smertin, who moved from Girondins Bordeaux to Chelsea two months ago
before joining the London club's premier league rivals Portsmouth on
loan, hopes to be fit for the first leg in Moscow on November 15.
The Russians travel to Wales for the second leg in Cardiff four days
later.
