According to a Football Association source Eriksson was determined to take a firm stance because he knew a line had been crossed. 'This was as angry as Sven has been,' he said. 'He was incensed.' Eriksson said: 'I did not like what I saw and it is bad for England. Even if you do not agree to being substituted, you have to accept it if you are a professional. I had to calm the team down at half-time, telling them to be aggressive without being stupid. Rooney will behave himself in future. I'm not worried about that.' Eriksson's reaction contrasted with that of Sir Alex Ferguson, Rooney's manager at Manchester United, who told Observer Sport that he had spoken to the FA about his player. 'There's no way Rooney intentionally tried to dishonour either player [Hughes or Weller],' he said.
