Manchester United and Chelsea were both prominent in the Actim Index Team of
the Season as they battled it out at the top of the table. And a superb
season for Everton saw two of their players finish in the final 11, while
Tottenham Hostpur, Liverpool, Arsenal and Portsmouth were also represented.
David James (Portsmouth) Much-travelled custodian broke David Seaman's
Premier League clean sheets record in an outstanding debut season for Pompey,
which saw him crowned the club's Player of the Year. Fittingly, James
finished the season by saving a penalty from Arsenal's Gilberto.
Steve Finnan (Liverpool) The Republic of Ireland international has played a
key role in Liverpool's miserly defence. Attacking full-back Finnan has
constantly proved to be equally effective with his attacking play as his
dependable defending.
Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea) Portugal international has shone in an
injury-disrupted Chelsea defence this season, with the Blues keeping 18 clean
sheets when he has been in the side. Carvalho has also suffered from injury
problems, in which time he was sorely missed by boss Jose Mourinho.
Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United) Classy defender was instrumental in
United's Barclays Premiership success, forming a solid performance with
Nemanja Vidic which helped keep 14 clean sheets as Sir Alex Ferguson's side
denied Chelsea yet another domestic title.
Phil Neville (Everton) Versatile England international has played a key role
as Toffees skipper this term, leading his side to European qualification
while operating equally effectively on either flank of the defence or in a
holding midfield role.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) The PFA Player of the Year and Young
Player of the Year was the Barclays Premiership's second-highest scorer with
17 goals and pushed Didier Drogba all the way in the battle to top the Actim
Index, but eventually had to settle for second place.
Frank Lampard (Chelsea) The consistent Lampard was a driving force in
Chelsea's ultimately unsuccessful challenge for a third successive Barclays
Premiership title. His natural eye for goal saw him find the back of the net
11 times and he also provided 11 assists.
Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal) Spain midfield starlet has consistently produced
majestic performances to defy his tender years. Fabregas provided 13 assists
from the central of midfield and is regarded as one of the finest young
talents in the Barclays Premiership.
Mikel Arteta (Everton) Spaniard has staked a strong claim for an
international call-up by providing the creative spark for Everton. In the
absence of injured midfield colleague Tim Cahill for much of the season,
Arteta's influence has been even more crucial than ever.
Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham Hotspur) Bulgaria striker has been a revelation
in his first season in the Barclays Premiership, scoring 12 goals and
providing 11 assists in a Spurs side that secured fifth place and won many
admirers along the way with their attractive brand of football.
Didier Drogba (Chelsea) The Ivory Coast hitman finished top of the Actim
Index after a magnificent season which also saw him finish as leading scorer
in the Barclays Premiership after finding the back of the net on 20 occasions
for the Blues.
