President Trump wants FIFA President Gianni Infantino to be the next secretary
-general of the United Nations, The Post has learned.
《紐約郵報》（The Post）獲悉，美國總統Donald Trump希望FIFA主席 Gianni Infantin
o 成為下一任聯合國秘書長
Infantino, 56, grew close to Trump through organizing this year’s World Cup,
with the Swiss-born soccer administrator bending over backward to charm and in
clude Trump, even giving him FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize in December.
56 歲的 Infantino 因籌辦今年世界盃而與 Trump 關係日益密切。這位出生於瑞士的足
球行政主管極力拉攏並禮遇 Trump，甚至在去年 12 月向他頒發 FIFA 首屆和平獎（FIFA
Peace Prize）。
Trump believes that Infantino “is respected by everyone around the world, and
recognizes he has a special ability to bring people together,” a source clos
e to the president told The Post.
一位接近 Trump 的消息人士向《紐約郵報》表示，Trump 認為 Infantino「受到全世界
的尊敬，而且擁有凝聚各方、團結眾人的特殊能力」。
The next secretary-general will be elected this year to replace the retiring A
nt鏮io Guterres of Portugal, who will step down at the end of December.
下一任聯合國秘書長將於今年選出，接替將於 12 月底卸任的葡萄牙籍秘書長 Ant鏮io G
uterres。
To secure the position, Infantino would need to win the endorsement of the 15-
member Security Council — where the five permanent members hold vetoes — fol
lowed by confirmation by the General Assembly.
若要出任聯合國秘書長，Infantino 必須先獲得由 15 個成員組成的聯合國安全理事會支
持（其中 5 個常任理事國擁有否決權），之後再由聯合國大會正式確認任命。
It’s unclear if Infantino wants the job and to what extent Trump has discusse
d the topic with him.
目前尚不清楚 Infantino 是否有意角逐這項職位，也不清楚 Trump 是否已與他深入討論
過此事。
But Trump senses a clear opening among a field that one insider described as s
even “lame” candidates.
不過Trump 認為這次選舉存在明顯機會。一位知情人士形容，目前有意角逐的七位候選人

The best-known contenders include Chile’s socialist former president Michelle
Bachelet, who could face US resistance, and Argentina’s Rafael Grossi, the c
urrent director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who could f
ace concerns from the UK over the disputed Falkland Islands.
目前較知名的候選人包括智利前總統、社會主義政治人物 Michelle Bachelet，她可能遭
到美國反對；以及阿根廷籍、現任國際原子能總署（IAEA）總幹事 Rafael Grossi，他則

Trump’s concept would upend the anticipated selection of a candidate from Lat
in America or the Caribbean — a region last repped by secretary-general Javie
r P廨ez de Cu幨lar of Peru between 1982 and 1991.

But multiple sources say that soft geographic rotation would not necessarily b
lock Infantino and that it’s possible he could pick up multiple nominations i
n addition to Trump’s.

Infantino regularly appeared with Trump, including bringing golden trophies to
the White House and even bestowing upon Trump FIFA’s first peace prize after
repeated Nobel snubs.

Paolo Zampolli, the Italian-American businessman and diplomat serving as Trump
’s special envoy for global partnerships, told The Post that “only President
Trump could have such a genius idea.”

Zampolli said Infantino “would do a great job” and is “liked by everybody”
— describing him as potentially bringing fresh energy to the massive bureauc
racy and using sports to build new bridges and inspire the world’s young and
poor populations.
Zampolli 表示，Infantino「一定能勝任這份工作」，而且「受到所有人的喜愛」。他認
為，Infantino 能為龐大的聯合國官僚體系注入新活力，並透過體育搭起新的橋梁，激勵

“There is some similarity” between the roles of FIFA president and UN secret
ary-general, said Zampolli, a personal friend of Infantino’s and a former amb
assador to the UN for the small island nation of Dominica.

“At the United Nations, you have to deal with 193 member states. In FIFA, the
re are over 200 members [and] Gianni’s great record shows he knows how to man

Zampolli spent time with Infantino at last weekend’s World Cup final in New J
ersey but said they did not discuss the concept and was surprised to learn of
it from The Post.

Trump has fumed about what he views as the UN’s inactivity in mediating major
world conflicts and last year created a new US-led Board of Peace that drew s
peculation he was setting up a rival organization — as he brokered peace deal
s, including between Israel and Hamas — though Trump denied it and said he ho
pes the UN will take a more active role.
Trump 一直批評聯合國在調停重大國際衝突上的作為過於消極。他去年成立了一個由美國

Since reentering the White House last year, Trump has slashed US contributions
to the UN and withdrawn from many of its sub-organizations, including the Wor
ld Health Organization, UNESCO and the UN Human Rights Council.
自去年重返白宮後，Trump 大幅削減美國對聯合國的資助，並退出多個聯合國旗下機構，
包括世界衛生組織（WHO）、聯合國教科文組織（UNESCO）及聯合國人權理事會（UNHRC）

Installing Infantino could improve Trump’s relationship with the UN.
若 Infantino 出任聯合國秘書長，可能有助於改善 Trump 與聯合國之間的關係。
However, if the president is successful, it would come with a steep pay cut fo
r Infantino, who earns about $6 million a year at FIFA.
不過如果真的成功，Infantino 將面臨大幅減薪。目前他在 FIFA 的年薪約為 600 萬美
元。
The secretary-general’s recently reported compensation amounted to about $418
,000.
根據近期資料，聯合國秘書長的年薪約為 41.8 萬美元。
Infantino has declared his candidacy for re-election as FIFA president. That s
election process occurs next March.
Infantino 已宣布將競選連任 FIFA 主席，相關選舉將於明年 3 月舉行。
He did not immediately respond to The Post’s emailed request for comment abou
t the UN opening.
