Much to prove for Lyon and Madrid

Olympique Lyonnais and Real Madrid CF were both eliminated from last
season's UEFA Champions League by close margins.
The French club, now domestic champions for the fourth successive season,
reached the quarter-finals before losing 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2
aggregate draw with PSV Eindhoven.
It was the first non-final in the history of the competition to be decided
by a shoot-out.

Spanish runners-up Madrid also lost narrowly, to Juventus FC in the first
knockout round. Ivan Helguera's goal proved the difference in Madrid, but
David Trezeguet equalised in the return leg to send the tie into extra time.
A 116th-minute strike from Marcelo Zalayeta then took Juventus into the last
eight.
So both teams may feel they are due an upturn in fortune this season.
And can Raul Gonzalez be the first to 50 goals in the competition?

Lyon will play Madrid for the first time in UEFA competition, though their
recent Champions League experience has pitted them against Spanish opponents
on three occasions.

The first encounters saw the French champions beaten at home following
defeats in Spain.
In Group C of the 2000/01 first group stage, eventual finalists Valencia CF
won 1-0 at the Mestalla, then 2-1 at Stade Gerland, but Lyon managed three
victories elsewhere in the section to go through as well.

The following term, FC Barcelona provided the opposition in Group F of the
first group stage.
Rivaldo and Patrick Kluivert gave the hosts a 2-0 success at Camp Nou, and
as Barcelona dominated the group, Lyon lost 3-2 at home to a 94th-minute
Gerard Lopez strike.

After four defeats by Spanish clubs in four games, Lyon gained revenge in the
first knockout round in 2003/04 against Real Sociedad de Futbol.
Two 1-0 wins took the Ligue 1 side into the quarter-finals to give them
confidence for their meeting with Madrid.

The early European successes of Madrid were often at the expense of French
teams.
The 1956 and 1959 European Champion Clubs' Cup finals were both won against
Stade de Reims Champagne, by 4-3 and 2-0, as the Merengues tasted glory in
the tournament's first five editions.

Madrid have faced two French clubs in the Champions League.
In 2003/04, they were drawn alongside Olympique de Marseille and won both
Group F games, 4-2 at home and 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome.

But in the quarter-finals of the same campaign, Madrid came unstuck against
AS Monaco FC. A 4-2 home victory had seemed convincing enough, and a Raul
goal in Monaco then increased the margin.
But Monaco came storming back with three goals to progress on away goals.
Curiously, Madrid were undone by their own player: Monaco's on-loan forward
Fernando Morientes scored crucial efforts in both legs.
