LISBON, Dec. 22(Xinhuanet)--
The government of Portugal demanded to the Portuguese Professional
Soccer League(LPFP) and the Portuguese Soccer Federation(FPF),
to pay 20 million euros(26 million dollars) in fiscal debts.
The debt resulted from an agreement signed in 1998, according to
which 80 percent of the income of the Totobola football pools,
would be paid to the clubs which returned to the State half of
59 million euros in fiscal debts.
According to the Minister of Finances, Antonio Bagao, if the benefits
of the football pools were insufficient, LPFP and FPF would be forced
to pay the reimbursement.
For this reason, the State notified the payment of the 20 million euros
resulting from the drop in the income from the football pools.
"The Portuguese don't understand the reason why the clubs have
to pay millions of euros to buy players in January and not to
pay their debts to the State," he said.
The Portuguese League decided to appeal, as this is a"grave" case
that affects"soccer altogether," said its president, Cunha Leal.
On the other hand, the FPF leader, Gilberto Madail, assured
"we never were informed about anything."
According to the Portuguese media, Porto FC and Benfica top the
list of nearly 20 debtors.
This problem adds to that of the Portuguese government to prevent
a public deficit in the order of 3.0 percent demanded by the Pact
of Stability and Growth in the euro zone.
