LISBON, March 6 (Reuters)
Benfica maintained the pressure on Portuguese Premier League leaders Porto when
a second half Nuno Gomes goal was enough to earn his side a 1-0 victory at
Nacional Madeira on Sunday.
The striker headed the only goal of the match shortly after halftime, latching
on to captain Simao Sabrosa's neat cross from the right.
Nacional Madeira squandered a golden opportunity to equalise in the 79th minute
when Adriano hit the post from the penalty spot after the Brazilian striker had
be brought down in the area by Benfica keeper Quim.
Defending champions Porto, who beat Penafiel 2-1 on Saturday, remained top of
the standings with 45 points from 24 matches.
Benfica are on the same number of points but trail by virtue of the
head-to-head result between the teams.
Sporting had a chance to join the top two sides on 45 points, but a 1-0 defeat
at Belenenses on Sunday kept them three points off the pace in third place.
Belenenses scored the winner after 60 minutes when Pele pounced on a defensive
error by Sporting's Hugo Vieira to prod the ball into the net.
On Saturday, Boavista moved up to fourth position on 41 points following a
thrilling 3-3 draw at Estoril that witnessed four goals and a sending off in
the final 10 minutes.
Fifth-placed Braga, on 40 points, could climb to third with a victory at
Vitoria Setubal in Monday's game.
Porto came behind to beat struggling Penafiel, who opened the scoring on two
minutes when Brazilian striker Wesley was left unmarked to head home Clayton's
cross from the left.
The visitors piled on the pressure and scored a deserved equaliser in the 80th
minute when defender Pedro Emanuel nodded in a pinpoint cross from Valente.
As the home side battled to hold out for a draw, Benni McCarthy stepped up to
snatch victory with a deflected shot from inside the area.
The injury time strike was the South African's 50th goal for Porto in domestic
and international tournaments.
